Eastwynne (east-win)
The biggest city in the Commonwealth, the capital of New Creighton, and home to the Emris church and the Thorne family. It is considered the most notable and advanced city, drawing cultural inspiration from The United States of America and European countries. A surprising fact is its sizable human population considering its troubled past. Mages were not the only ones seeking refuge and wanting to leave America. It is known as a “city of dreams”, most moving there to find better opportunities in life, but due to the very competitive nature and the big gaps between social statuses, their aspirations are not realized.
Demographics
- Mages: 12.6 million
- Demihumans: 5.25 million
- Humans: 3.15 million
Government
Eastwynne uses a parliamentary system of government. The parliament operates directly under the Thorne noble family but is mostly in charge of creating laws, handling public affairs, and general governing. If the noble family decides to enact their authority, then the parliament must abide.
History
After the mages arrived on Earth, they settled on an island located off the shores of France, Spain, and the United Kingdom. The human population started to lessen due to fear of the new inhabitants, so there wasn't much in the way of stopping the mages from claiming the land. As the years went on the community grew eventually leading to the creation of a town, Eastwynne. The leaders being the original relic wielders.
The town in a generation became a city. The island was where mages were the most concentrated. There was apprehension with the idea of leaving, humans weren't the only ones afraid. The idea of venturing beyond the island was avoided, but some no longer wanted to be restricted to one area. They wanted to see more of the world. It wasn't until a few centuries later that happened en masse. An illness, the bubonic plague, decimated the human population in Europe, thus in a morbid way, giving the mages an opportunity to leave the island. And so they did, of the 6 relic wielders, only 2 remained (ancestors of the Thorne and Emris families) in Eastwynne and the rest left for Europe with others following suit.
Eastwynne's population continued to lower, the success of the other settlements spreading through the land encouraged more to travel. It eventually hit a plateau, and little changed in the way of life. Eastwynne was a quiet place to live without much excitement and that was fine for the ones who stayed, in fact, it became increasingly desired.
The human populace recovered from the epidemic and mages are now, intertwined with their activities. There were conflicts of minor and major scales, political strife, and wars. When living in the same areas, it's near impossible not to be involved. Internal affairs and external, the humans were quarreling amongst themselves but also saw the mages as a problem too even when they were not the enemies. This wasn't one-sided, however, mages have felt the same. Eastwynne didn't have these issues and was still mostly populated with mages. There were attempts at colonization, but there was no success. Although the island was placid the defense was formidable, as to prevent this very thing from ever happening.
2 major events have contributed to making Eastwynne the city that it is today and such a staple in mage society. As previously mentioned, wars were a major source of discord. Mages all those years ago didn't only leave for Europe, they traveled to every other continent on Earth. The British colonies in America had a decently-sized mage community who were losing patience with the way things were being handled there. The American Revolution, they thought, was a chance for them to overthrow human rule, but it failed. During the aftermath, most fled to Eastwynne, some humans fleeing as well.
In Europe, mages have been steadily returning back to Eastwynne, but it hit a boom during World War II. A tragedy of such a massive scale, and not dismiss prior appalling events, but this was the limit. Mage soldiers saw the horribleness of the crisis as those who wanted to help were on the front lines. They saw the depths of hatred that can fester and were even on the receiving end. Amongst the ranks, mages were near the bottom, treated unfairly, the same as their human peers, on the basis of nonsensical factors.
This treatment and infighting caused most mage troops to leave the military and distance themselves from it all. The general attitude was to "Let the humans figure it out without us.". New Creighton was left untouched during the war and was seen as an asylum. There was an exodus to Eastwynne and the neighboring cities, both mage and human alike. The mainland European countries faced massive population loss, at the end of World War II it dropped by around 60%.
Eastwynne was solidified as a city of refuge for mages and away from human influence. Throughout all major conflicts it has never wavered, its strength never depleting. In 1955, it became the most influential city of the commonwealth, and its power has only increased since then.
