Canoth The Jailer
The Old Man, Arch-wizard of Necromancy, Sorcerer-King, Elemental Master and Master of Bindings.
These and more are titles given to the oldest known Wizard on Haven: Canoth Oharad, Lich of Eifera.
Canoth is old. very old. He used some secret process long ago to make himself unaging, though he refuses to share the method nor does he divulge jsut how old he actually is. Scattered reports across history mention him even during the War of Tyrants and various events since. This would make him the oldest human on record, but Canoth claims that these are different mages. Still, he does not deny that he is very old and that he has spent most that time within his arcane sanctuary conducting experiments and studying the fabric of the universe. An accomplished sorcerer and necromancer, Canoth has had a long time to refine his craft and progress in his research.
Canoth lives in the Ravilian city of Eifera, serving as an advisor to the city's ruler Eduardo Alligieri. Alligieri is not the first ruler Canoth served, he has served to city's rulers for close to 400 years.
In exchange for his protection, the city of Eifera never decrees the death penalty for any of its criminals. Instead any that would be sentenced to death in the city are instead handed over to Canoth, to be used as test subjects for his experiments.
Canoth does not usually involve himself in the political affairs of the country beyond ensuring Eifera's rule is not disrupted, and as such he is mostly left alone.
Many wish to apprentice under the Sorcerer-King or to glimpse his research, but none ever succeed in convincing the Archwizard that they are worthy of his attention. He remains aloof, in his tower, a relic from ancient times.
Exploits/myths:
The Truth
In addition to his other titles, Canoth has a few more to those in the know: The Devourer, The Jailer, Bane of Kings, Lord of the dead, Scourge of the Living, Demon Friend.
The face Canoth shows to the world, the few times a decade he shows his face in public, is nothing but a carefully crafted mask; Sinister enough to be believable but harmless enough to be ignored.
In truth, Canoth Oharad is the true ruler of Eifera and has been so for more than 700 years, whoever the current ruler is is nothing but a pawn paid handsomly by Canoth to play the role in public and during diplomatic meetings. Even as they attend the meetings of the ruling council they do nothing but keep up appearances and do the Devourer's will.
Canoth uses the city he rules as a means to procure funding and to cover up any of his personal projects that might otherwise draw attention. The condemned of eifera are handed over to Canoth for his experiments, but canoth also ensures that the city's laws and economic situation is such that there is always a plentiful suply of criminals, and if a few innocents are caught up in the process the guards don't care and neither does Canoth.
In addition, by tradition that Canoth established, any dead in the city of eifera are interred in the tomb-complexes beneath the city, to be used as raw materials for the necromancer's vast army.
Canoth is ancient, far older than he pretends. He is a sorcerer from before even the War of Burning Skies and lerned the art of necromancy of old humanity, before it was forgotten. Canoth was neither the most brilliant or most powerful, merely lucky enough to get his hands on a method of extending his life and survive long enough to become an expert in his chosen field.
He fought during the War of Tyrants against the Jotnar and was part of the mission to sabotage the divine tower of Kharak. He helped the newly established Raven Knights during the Necromancer Crisis, and sealed the Nightmare King at the end of the Nightmare Wars.
The Devourer has long since left behind his humanity after many highly invasive modifications made to his body and soul. However despite his inhuman nature he is not obviously monstrous.
He is in all times calm, polite, logical and coldly calculating. He does not do things for his own ego, though he loves to talk and engage others in conversation. He treats his servants well, he ensures they have no cause to rebel against him, he ensures his suppliers are paid and that his enemies are few.
However he does these things for the sake of efficiency, not because he cares. He is fundamentally a psychopath who lacks empathy, caring only about his research and his plans, and not for who gets hurt in the process. When able, Canoth acts in the shadows and over long spans of time, using proxies to take the fall if possible and preferring disappearing into the shadow if something goes wrong, to try again elsewhere.
The Jailer has mastered most forms of magic, including alchemy, arcane magic, nature magic, spirit magic, divine magic and even chaos magic. He does not practise them all equally however, focusing on necromancy and arcane magic most of all.
He is favored by Xaaris for his continued research into the laws of reality, and priests of Xaaris are ordered to cooperate with Canoth wherever possible as a result. He carries the order with him, and makes sure to visit the patriarch of Xaaris of the Church of Haven whenever a new one comes into office to get it renewed.
If he wanted it, canoth could have ascended to Divinity long ago. Indeed, he has written a book on it; the Liber Divinitatis.
He has the resources, power and knowledge to achieve this. However he does not, for it would mean subjugating himself to the will of The divine Machine and this is unacceptable to the arch-lich.
Canoth's ultimate goal is to build his own universe, to create a new home for humanity, away from the machinations of the gods. He has already built a prototype; The great Labyrinth of Eifera. The Labyrinth exists in an extradimensional space and is connected to several entrances across Haven. Notably, one of those entraces is in the Lionel County and is used by canoth for testing his creation.
The Labyrinth is a massive tomb-complex that at its heart imprisons the Nightmare King, contained here after the Nightmare Wars, which is where he earned his title as 'the Jailer'.

Appearance:
In public, canoth takes on the form of a wrinkly old man wreathed in ornate robes. However this is an illusion crated through magic. His true form is a gray skeleton encased in slender metal armor, made from rare metals and clearly magical even to the untrained eye.
Canoth never leaves his fortress with his true body, instead using proxies and puppet bodies almost exclusively. He is very paranoid about his safety.
