Overview
Elementals are primordial entities composed of raw elemental force, born before the rise of mortal life on Azeroth. During the world’s chaotic youth, they waged endless war across the land in service to their respective Elemental Lords. When the Titans ordered Azeroth, these elementals were banished to their own realms—the Elemental Planes—sealed off from the mortal world.
Though native to these realms, elementals can be summoned, bound, or unleashed into Azeroth through natural catastrophes, magical rituals, or plane-rending events. They range from simple, mindless motes of energy to immense beings of godlike power.
Shared Traits
- Manifestations of pure elemental essence
- Do not require food, sleep, or air
- Vary wildly in intelligence — from bestial to hyper-intelligent
- Some are immortal or reform when destroyed unless bound or slain in their home plane
- Vulnerable to opposing elements and shamanistic magic
Elemental Lords
Each elemental domain is ruled by a primordial overlord, often worshipped as gods by cultists or Primalists:
| Name | Element | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Ragnaros | Fire | Dead (slain in Firelands) |
| Neptulon | Water | Alive, elusive and reclusive |
| Therazane | Earth | Alive, neutral but distrustful |
| Al’Akir | Air | Dead (slain in Skywall) |
Lesser Known Elemental Variants
- Shadowflame Elementals – Corrupted hybrid fire/shadow beings (Fyrakk's forces)
- Primalist Elementals – Elementals empowered or summoned by mortals opposing titan order
- Volatile Elementals – Hybrid elementals, often unstable and chaotic (seen in Pandaria, Deepholm)
Elementals & Mortal Interaction
- Commonly summoned by mages (especially water elementals)
- Shamans commune with and bind them via the elements
- Often weaponized by Twilight’s Hammer, the Primal Incarnates, and various cults
- Some serve willingly, others resent any mortal interference
