Neptunian

"For the longest time, the moons of Sol VIII was home to the 'ice pirates,' a loosely affiliated band of anarchists that raided the inner system for goods and material. They were famous for their use of pykrete, a surprisingly tough material made from powdered plant material and water. In particular, their pykrete knives, which they sharpened with lasers, were feared tools of assassination and murder. It's a good indication of what a population of humans can get up to in desperate conditions with no supervision."   ~Quazhe, Kheezer Humanologist.

Ice Pirates

The Neptunians have a long, storied tradition of piracy. They are adapted to the cold of their home moons, and are uncomfortably warm in temperatures that have most people reaching for a light jacket. Their culture and home environs promote a sort of collective nihilism. They gain psychological strength in numbers and they care little about themselves while simultaneously being selfish and individualist in nature. This means that while the last pirate of a Neptunian crew may break and run, if there are two of them either would die for the other, with men being an order of magnitude more expendable than women. This applies even if they don't particularly like each other. This quirk made the Ice Pirates able to punch well above their weight in their heyday. It's also responsible for their use or, as some may say, overuse of Neptune Blue and Combat Stims which wreck their bodies and shorten their lifespans but give them an edge in battle.

Chemheads

Neptunians are the inventors and primary users of Neptune Blue. While they don't have an immunity to developing Blueteeth, they do have a much higher tolerance for it than others. Additionally, their bodies are able to process lesser Combat Stims and even caffeine more efficiently and with lessened side effects. All positive effects of stimulants last twice as long, a Neptunian's limit before OD is doubled, and a Neptunian can go twice as long before *needing* another hit.

Culture

Culture and cultural heritage

Neptunians never really got over their piratical history. While they democratically elect a Technocrat and are full members of the PSC, plenty of them sail the void in search of plunder.

Shared customary codes and values

The moons of Neptune are the purest extant democracies in the Solar System. They believe that everone should have a voice. This extends to their ships, which are only 'captained' insofar as emergencies go; Crews collectively own their ships and decide which voyages to take by vote. They elect their own Technocrat by popular vote. The first twelve Technocrats were appointed and subsequently murdered, but after the first year Aurelius Frost gave up and allowed them to choose their own.   Neptunians believe in a rugged individualist lifestyle.

Common Etiquette rules

Neptunians are never more serious than when they're gambling. Putting money on an outcome is a signal of importance.

Common Dress code

While their moons are terraformed to be livable, they are still cold, the equivalent of arctic and subarctic zones on Earth. They dress warmly and in layers when they have a choice. In temperatures that other humans find livable, they find it uncomfortable to wear many clothes at all. Most Neptunians find temperatures over 15 Celsius to be uncomfortable.

Art & Architecture

Neptunians build down. Their equivalent to a skyscraper are a stack of basements and subbasements.

Foods & Cuisine

Neptunian colonists in the early days engineered an ecosystem for their dark and frozen moons, primarily centered around geneticaly engineered burrowing animals and algae. Their food is collectively referred to as "Triton Balls." The sources of their food being small, they generally grind it up and roll it into balls with flour and cook it into various sauces. While the variety is enormous on Neptune, "Neptunian Food" franchises on other worlds has a specific sauce that Neptunians themselves would never touch made from cloned meat drippings and seaweed.

Common Customs, traditions and rituals

Neptunians demand a 'full share' for their work, which doesn't quite mean dividing the spoils equally but it does mean dividing the spoils as agreed. Corporations have universally discovered that the phrase 'read the fine print' is a great way to rediscover what 'getting keel-hauled' means in the Age of Convergence.

Birth & Baptismal Rites

When a Neptunian is born, they're shown to their mother's relatives in a celebratory gathering.

Coming of Age Rites

When Neptunians reach the age of sixteen (Standard Terran Years), they are unceremoniously turned out and expected to make their own way.

Funerary and Memorial customs

Neptunians who die are wrapped in winding cloths with their friends, crewmates, and family's eulogies and epitaphs written by hand on them. Then, they're sent into space.

Common Taboos

Being known as a welcher, someone who doesn't give what they owe, is a fate worse than death for most Neptunians. A welcher will rapidly find their prospects on Neptune drying up as word gets out until they finally pay their debts.

Ideals

Beauty Ideals

Neptunians put a premium on youth, energy and vigor. They typically sport pale skin and black freckles that cluster on their cheeks beneath their eyes. There's something of a tradition of them 'connecting the dots' with tattoos to make constellations.

Gender Ideals

Neptunians are tough customers, with men traditionally prone to displays of machismo. A quirk of mutation means there are three men born for every woman, and Neptunian men take great pains to attract feminine attention. Consequently, Neptunian women are used to being treated with respect by default and have few if any qualms about applying force in response to disrespect.

Courtship Ideals

Men attract the attention of a woman by being extraordinary. Given the nature of Neptunian culture, this usually means violence of some kind. Even if it isn't violence, there's guaranteed to be competition. Neptunian women tend to treat their men as disposable.

Relationship Ideals

Neptunian women look for men who impress them, and abandon those men when they are no longer impressive. Long relationships are often considered a point of pride for men, and are somewhat stigmatized for the woman.
