House of Campe
“A Campe is not here to dazzle or to posture. We are here because something needs to be done, and no one else has the time, courage, or honesty to do it.”
Overview
The House of Campe is a pragmatic minor house with outsized influence around Saturn. Where other houses chase glory, artifice, or arcane power, Campe focuses on results. Their reputation is less aristocratic and more bureaucratic—an unusual noble lineage that survives and thrives by being indispensable intermediaries between Saturn’s Technocracy and its private contractors.
Though their holdings are modest compared to the Great Houses, Campe’s territorial instinct is fierce. They defend their jurisdiction with uncommon resolve, even threatening confrontation with titans such as House of Helicon or Haus des Drachen when their authority is disrespected.
Origins and Role
House Campe rose to prominence during the Iapetian War of ’49, when Saturn’s planetary defense forces became overstretched. A new house was formed to oversee Harpe Station, Saturn’s orbital prison, and manage the growing web of private-public needs. Out of this necessity, Campe embedded itself as the official contractor-handlers of Saturn, a house that functioned less like nobility and more like an agency of statecraft.
At the heart of this arrangement was their creation of Scorpio Corp, a private-public firm majority-owned by Campe itself. This unique structure blurred the lines between noble duty and corporate pragmatism, granting Saturn an unusual flexibility in governance and crisis management.
Political Philosophy
House Campe’s motto is utility before grandeur. They are not above profit or prestige, but they are keenly aware that their survival rests on proving themselves necessary. Saturn’s Technocrat of the moment often relies on Campe to:
- Manage budget flows between state needs and private enterprises.
- Respond to emergency crises, from outbreaks to pirate incursions.
- Fill gaps where Saturn’s bureaucracy moves too slowly.
This has bred resentment from other houses, who see Campe as officious or mercenary. But it has also bred respect—the Campe deliver.
Military Tradition
Unlike most houses, House Campe does not emphasize knightly single combat or the armored cavalry charges beloved by the Great Houses. Instead, their Men-at-Arms (MAA) are trained as dragoons, mounted infantry who fight with adaptability and pragmatism.
- Contragrav Sleds: Campe dragoons use compact contragrav sleds for rapid maneuvering. In battle, they dismount to fight, using the sleds to carry Equipment, heavy weapons, or even swarms of kamikaze drones.
- Flexible Loadouts: Campe dragoons are famed for being able to alter their loadouts mid-battle. They compensate for their lower-quality Equipment (compared to Great House elites) by sheer versatility and volume of options.
- Psychological Edge: Beginning an engagement with a swarm of drones is standard practice, overwhelming enemies with distractions and attrition before dismounted troops engage.
This doctrine mirrors Campe philosophy as a whole: not the best Equipment or the most glorious traditions, but practical, flexible tools to win ugly fights.
Relations with Other Houses
House Campe is one of the few minor houses willing to openly defy or threaten Great Houses. Their position as Saturn’s indispensable operators grants them confidence to resist encroachment. While they do not seek confrontation, they make it clear that interference in Saturn’s affairs will be met with force.
Other minor houses regard Campe with a mixture of envy and irritation. They dislike Campe’s corporate partnerships but cannot deny their effectiveness.
Legacy and Reputation
To Saturnites, House Campe is both resented and relied upon. They are the gatekeepers of logistics, the nobles who act like managers, and the managers who wield swords like nobles. Their close relationship with Scorpio Corp has blurred the line between aristocracy and corporatocracy—but it is precisely this hybrid role that has made Saturn more nimble than its Size alone would suggest.
House Campe’s legacy is not one of grandeur, but of necessity, competence, and territorial pride. They are not glamorous—but they are essential.
