Löpenskold Championships

Gehe zur deutschen Version: Löpenskold-Meisterschaften

The Löpenskold Championship takes place once a year and includes a total of 15 teams. Each team plays both home and away matches against every other team, resulting in 28 games per team. The point system is clearly defined: one point is awarded for each win, and draws are excluded. At the end of the season, the total number of points determines the ranking. If there is a tie at the top of the table, a playoff match is scheduled—a single, decisive duel that determines the championship title. This match is considered one of the most emotional events of the season and attracts spectators from all regions.

Each city has at least one Löpenskold field, some even have two, but only Skipti has a stadium. It is even roofed with frostglass, donated by a very wealthy fan about 70 years ago and commissioned in Galdra. Special sound funnels, also manufactured in Galdra, allow the stadium announcer to be heard throughout the stadium (and even in the surrounding area). The current announcer, Fenrir Sharp-Tongue, is almost as popular as the teams themselves due to his biting yet accurate commentary. Stadium matches are always sold out, and often visitors stand outside just to listen if they couldn’t get a seat.

The championship is organized in Vintergard, as the first tournaments were held there and a small committee of referees and organizers was formed, which still exists today. The idea of a championship was also born here. Many enthusiastic fans wish that the OLM (Organization of the Löpenskold Championships) were based in Skipti, but others fear the influence of the Ice Bears (Skipti’s city team). Therefore, the location of the OLM has remained unchanged since its founding.

The championship trophy is a challenge cup, with the names of all champions from the past 21 years engraved on its base. The base has room for 40 entries (10 on each side) and, once full, is handed over to the team with the most titles. As long as there is space left, the winning team from the previous year holds the trophy and passes it on once the new champions are determined.

“Föndir quakes, Föndir stands”
We are the fist no one tames
Two coaches gone, four players out
But none fall – we tough it out

“Föndir strikes, Föndir grins”
We hit hard and that with might
Three teeth lost, a bruised-up chin
And no one asks if we play right
