Istorn's Fragment Shower

Gehe zur deutschen Version: Istorns Splitterschwarm

Description

An annually recurring meteor shower that crosses Thaldris during the deepest phase of darkness. The particles originate from the disintegrated comet Istorn, whose dust trail contains silvery crystal fragments. Upon entering the atmosphere, they produce brief, bright streaks of light—visible even through fog—and pierce the darkness for several nights.

Calendar Position

The swarm appears regularly from Frostagon 139 to 143—the month of Hversyn begins on this day and marks the longest and darkest period in the Frostborn calendar.
  • Day 139: First shards are observed
  • Day 141: Peak with the most luminous streaks
  • Day 143: Final stragglers fade—darkness returns

Atmospheric Effects

  • The sky appears clearer, the air dry and crisp
  • Silver streaks illuminate the nights, even during moon-weak phases
  • Some Frostborn report heightened alertness and more vivid dreams

Cultural Significance

The shard swarm is seen as a light-greeting from the stars, a natural reminder that even in the deepest darkness, movement and beauty are possible. No fixed rituals are held, but many gather spontaneously to observe, share stories, or simply sit in silence.   Legends say that the souls of departed Frostborn return in this way—most often those of notable figures. It’s not uncommon for many children to be born four months later (between the 1st and 9th of Skeltruna or Skurnir).   It has become tradition to send silent wishes to the ancestors during these nights—not spoken aloud, but held in thought.

Symbolism

The swarm reminds the Frostborn that change can come gently and quietly. The bright season is drawing near, and each day Solvindir rises a little higher in the sky. The shard swarm also symbolizes love between man and woman.
