Guardians of Endórëmar

The image above captures a moment of silent observation, as a Guardian watches from the treeline, unseen and unspoken.

The Past Ages
For over nine millennia, the Guardians of Endórëmar have stood as the last beacon of the Elven race in Tathariel. Over time, they have undergone monumental changes, both in their roles and their forms. Their ethereal glow, once indicative of their ethereal beauty, now resonates with the wisdom of countless ages. Their eyes, once bright and curious, now carry the weight of time and the deep understanding of the intricate dance of nature and civilizations.
“Time tempers light into something stronger than flame. We no longer glow to dazzle, but to endure.”
— Ellendriel, Presiding Seer of the Council
The Progress of their Missions
Monitoring Mankind: Initially, the first group of elves observed humanity with a detached curiosity, only documenting and understanding without interfering. However, as time wore on and the impact of humanity grew, the elves occasionally subtly guided humans away from causing significant harm to nature. Their Far Sight ability allowed them to foresee potential threats, ensuring the natural equilibrium remained relatively unscathed.
“A fallen tree is easily replaced. A forest lost to greed is not.”
— Ancient Elven Observation Scroll, Entry 17b
Guarding the Portals: The portal-guardians ensured that no malicious entities entered their world and that the delicate balance between dimensions was upheld. With time, fewer portals opened up. Many believed this reduction was because the realm was slowly stabilizing, while others whispered that it was reaching its eventual end.   The Grand Encyclopedia: This became a monument of knowledge. Hidden deep within The Forbidden Elven Realm, it was shielded by enchantments, allowing only those with pure intent to access its vast wisdom. The encyclopedia evolved with the addition of new scrolls, magic-infused crystals, and holographic imprints that portrayed the history and discoveries of the elven race.
Governance and Leadership
The guardians' governance was initially based on consensus. As the millennia passed, the necessity for a more structured system became evident. They formed the "Council of the Ageless," comprising the oldest and wisest 7 elves. This council was responsible for making significant decisions, with Ellendriel, a master of Far Sight, serving as their presiding leader.
The Waning Vigil
While their dedication to their mission never faltered, there was an undeniable sense of fatigue that enveloped the guardians. Some expressed a longing to join their ascended kin. Their fatigue wasn’t merely physical but was a deep-seated weariness of the soul. The weight of watching, guiding, and guarding for millennia had taken its toll.   Their ancient eyes saw hope in the humans, especially in the druids who revered nature and sought balance in everything. The guardians secretly hoped that, in time, the druids would become the new stewards of Endórëmar, taking up the mantle they so heavily bore. This would allow the guardians to finally rest, entrusting the world's safety to those who walked in harmony with it.   However, their hopes were shattered with the onset of the civil war, as mankind was torn asunder by its own ambitions. The rise of The Holy Dominion of Daghda, with its focus on dominion over nature rather than harmony, further deepened the guardians' dismay. The church, with its mighty arm and zealous intent, regarded the ancient teachings of the druids with contempt. The guardians watched with sorrow as the very beacon of hope they had placed in mankind was extinguished by the very same hands.
“We lit a candle in the dark... only to see it crushed under iron.”
— Councilor Thalirien, shortly after the rise of the Holy Dominion
This setback not only added to their immense fatigue but also brought forth an element of despair. The question arose more frequently: Could they ever find worthy successors, or were they bound to their endless vigil till the world's very end?
Communion with the Ascended
Communication with the ascended elves was reserved for monumental moments. These rare instances included the approach of a significant catastrophe, the discovery of a potent source of magic that might unbalance their realm, or an internal crisis within the guardian community that required divine wisdom.   For instance, when The Holy Dominion of Daghda began its aggressive expansion, there was a debate among the guardians whether to seek the Ascended's guidance. Another instance was when a mysterious force began to weaken the protective enchantments around The Grand Encyclopedia, threatening its vast reservoir of knowledge.
Conclusion
While the ancient guardians remained the stewards of Endórëmar, their challenges evolved over the millennia. Despite their growing fatigue, they upheld their promise, ensuring the preservation of nature and the legacy of the elven race. Their story is not just of duty and commitment but also of sacrifice, resilience, and the ageless spirit of guardianship.
What Might Have Been
Among the countless crystalline pages of the Grand Encyclopedia, there lies a single volume no Guardian remembers writing.   It is shelved like all others, bound in the same palewood and silver leaf. Its title, “What Might Have Been”, shifts and fades when looked at too long — as if undecided whether it should exist.   Those who open it report strange things. One saw a version of history where the elves had left Tathariel entirely. Another saw a world where the Church never rose, and the Druids ruled from cities grown like trees. One young scribe claimed it showed him his own death, peaceful and surrounded by kin — though he had no children, nor ever planned to.   The Council of the Ageless has forbidden attempts to translate or duplicate the book. Some whisper that it was not written, but grew, a result of so many minds pressing against time’s flow for so long that something bent backward.   To this day, it remains on its shelf.   Unread in full.   Undeletable.   Just… there.   Waiting.

Flickering Boundaries
Ellendriel: The Tintalle Vírea seal pulses unevenly. I felt it last night — a shiver across the void, like a breath drawn too sharply.   Thalirien: I felt it too. Faint, but... fraying. How long has it been since we walked that path? Five decades? Six?   Ellendriel: Longer. And every year, our steps grow heavier, our presence more watched.   Thalirien: The seal needs tending. You know this. We could go quietly, just two — the old paths still breathes.   Ellendriel: And if we are seen? The Church would call it a curse. A demon rising from the dirt. They no longer know what we are. Only that we are not them.   Thalirien: (sighs) Then we leave the seal to weaken?   Ellendriel: Let it dim. Let the land speak in our silence. If they will not hear our words, let them hear the wind howling through fractured magic.   Thalirien: And when it becomes more than howling?   Ellendriel: Then perhaps they will remember the old stories — and wonder why the world resists them.   Thalirien: Do you think they will ever ask for help?   Ellendriel: (quietly) Only when it is nearly too late. And when they do... we must choose to answer, or not.
