Táriporti

Doors to the Planes

At the height of their power, the Valaraith uncovered a magic unlike any other—Táriporti, the art of opening passages to realms beyond the known world. It began not with ambition, but with accident.
The First Breach
A young mage, experimenting with harmonic resonance between several charged Ciryathanor crystals, unwittingly shaped a pattern of vibration and verse that cut a seam in the fabric of reality. For a single heartbeat, the world shimmered—and she vanished. When she returned moments later, her eyes were wide with wonder.
“I stood upon a field of stars that whispered in colors. I breathed sound. I heard silence.”
— Aluvarë, first witness of the breach
Her tale was met with skepticism. But repeated incidents—accidental displacements, sudden shifts in surroundings, or moments of being elsewhere without walking—soon convinced the Valaraith that something fundamental had changed.
Trials and Errors
The elven scholars and arcanists—who came to call themselves the Helcarandor, or Plane Walkers—devoted themselves to understanding this dangerous gift. Yet, the early experiments with Táriporti were not without their trials and tribulations. There were instances where explorers ventured through, only to find themselves lost in alien worlds, unable to find their way back. It was a time of trepidation, where the boundaries of the known world were expanded but also fraught with the perils of the unknown.   Among the stories that emerged from this period, one tale spoke of an intrepid mage who ventured through a portal only to find himself ensnared in a realm of shifting illusions. The mage spent years navigating the ever-changing landscape before escaping back to Lirionostarë. Upon returning he found that what he had experienced as years, only passed as a few minutes for the other elves and he was not yet presumed missing, a testament to the dangers that lurked beyond Táriporti. Such stories, while filled with cautionary elements, did not dissuade the Valaraith from their pursuit of knowledge and exploration.
Shaping the Art
Over time, the Valaraith honed their mastery of Táriporti, developing techniques to stabilize the portals and establish a means of secure passage. The process required precision and mastery over magical energies, with elven spellcasters dedicating themselves to this intricate art. With each successful creation of a stable portal, the Valaraith's understanding of the greater cosmos expanded, offering glimpses into realms of wonder and peril.   The legacy of Táriporti remains etched into the annals of elven history, a testament to the Valaraith's insatiable desire to push the boundaries of magic. While the early days of exploration were marked by uncertainty and challenges, the eventual mastery of the Doors to the Planes opened up a new chapter of discovery, where the Valaraith's gaze extended far beyond their own world, into the realms unknown, radiant and ruinous alike.
“We did not seek to conquer the beyond. We merely wished to knock—once—and listen for what knocked back.”
— Vaeril Sarnë, Helcarandor Seer
Where Few May Step
Vaeril Sarnë: You understand, of course, that what you seek is not travel—but transformation. Why do you wish to walk between the planes?   Ilanwe: Not to escape. Not to possess. Only… to know. To witness what lies beyond the veil we call the world.   Vaeril: (nods slightly) Curiosity is the first song. But what if the answer you find undoes your sense of truth?   Ilanwe: Then I would learn a new truth. If it breaks me, let me break open, not apart.   Vaeril: Hm. Many say such things before the wind answers them with silence.   (Vaeril leans forward slightly, his voice low and measured.)   Vaeril: Tell me the five harmonics of a stable crystal arc.   Ilanwe: Pulse, bend, pitch, hum, and release. In that order. Unless the portal leads to a mutable realm—then hum comes before pitch.   (A flicker of amusement—approval?—in Vaeril’s eyes.)   Vaeril: And what of the warnings in the Spiral Record? Have you read them?   Ilanwe: Yes, Master. Twice aloud. Once in silence.   Vaeril: (quietly) That is the proper way.   (He studies her a moment longer. Then, gently, with the weight of centuries behind his words—)   Vaeril: One final question. When you stand before a Door that leads nowhere… what do you do?   Ilanwe: I listen. If it is truly nowhere, it will tell me nothing. And that too is knowledge.   (There’s a pause. Then a faint inclination of his head.)   Vaeril: Very well, Ilanwe. Your answers will be reviewed by the council of Helcarandor. You will be summoned when the stars align in your favor—or not at all. Do you understand?   Ilanwe: Yes, Master. I will wait. And prepare.   Vaeril: (softly, as she turns to go) Do not wait. Only prepare.
