The Free Cities of Härtenstadt
The free cities are a democratic alliance of dwarven city states. Härtenstadt is an industrious and isolated nation, centered around the titular city, Härtenstadt. Each of the various cities within Härtenstadt is fiercely independent, and it is extremely odd how they manage to agree on anything well enough to form a single political body. They are perhaps unified by one thing only: consolidation of power. The cities are surrounded by unified powers that could threaten to wipe them out one by one, despite their advances. Dwarves on Tascallon are incapable of performing magic naturally, as their creators were born from the bones of the world, without connection to the astral causeways. To make up for this, the dwarves have created inventions fueled by the magic of the world itself, which supplement their abilities. Some have even taken to implanting themselves with magical instruments, allowing themselves to replicate wizardry.
Leadership
The Härtenstadt dwarves have a Lord Mayor for every city in the confederacy, who all meet in Härtenstadt twice a year to discuss matters. In times of war, they elect a Steel Overseer from among them to command the armies. The latest Steel Overseer, and likely returning one, is Rhamm Sunstone, a gifted engineer and a savant with pyrotechnics.
