Cannis City

Cannis City (often referred to incorrectly as “Cannis”) is the capital of the kingdom of Cannis, the second largest nation in Tanera (after Obane).

Structure

The city is a sprawling metropolis, home to some 60,000 citizens, covering about 25 miles of the continent’s west coast and stretching inland for about 17 miles along the Tiree River. The city used to be walled, but as it expanded this was eventually dismantled, though parts of it still remain dotted along the old border, and many locals make the casual distinction between the “inner” and “outer” city. Today the city borders are marked by tall guard towers spaced a mile or so apart, which are permanently manned by members of the royal army.   The city is divided into a number of districts:
  • The Bridges (an area criss-crossed by canals and home to the merchant classes)
  • The Roses (where most of the larger arts venues and gardens are located)
  • The Royal Quarter (which includes the walled palace of Cannis’s monarch, and a number of noble households)
  • The Arches (dominated by the College of Magical Research
  • The Weaves (home of Ershal Academic College, and much of the middle classes)
  • The Port District (lying along the coast and containing all the city’s ports and harbours)

Transport

Horses and carts are available to loan from a number of liveries for those who do not own them, and there are also cabs (horse-drawn vehicles of various quality, depending how much one is willing to spend) which can be hired for single journeys. These are useful for those who wish to traverse longer distances and are disinclined or unable to walk, but are not significantly faster due to traffic and being limited to main streets.   Within those areas supported by the river or canals, boat is a quicker option. Unlike road transport, a licence is required to sail a boat on the city’s waters, and many make a living from carrying travellers for a fee. Both these small boats and those who sail them are known as “bridgers” or “bargers” - after the district where they are most commonly found, and the somewhat aggressive manner in which they speed to their destination.

Geography

The Tiree, around which Cannis City is built, runs from the Shadowcap Hills in the north-east to an estuary which dominates the Port District. Within the city its width varies, up to about half a mile at its widest point. The city also has a fairly extensive canal network branching off from the river, most notably in the Bridges, which allows for faster travel than navigating the city’s bustling streets on foot, carriage, or horseback.
