Flamebound
The honor of Flamebound is a newly created title within the Order of Arelian, established in 477 HE following the events of a catastrophic wild magic surge that threatened to tear a leyline convergence apart. During this crisis, a bonded pair—Sahar Lyssan Vale and Guardian Coren Dravik—held the line against a rift storm for three days, sacrificing their own lives to prevent a planar breach. Their act saved thousands and stabilized the ley currents, but the cost was immense.
In recognition of their sacrifice, the Grand Sahar decreed the creation of the title Flamebound, awarded to Sahar-Guardian pairs who demonstrate extraordinary unity, courage, and selflessness in the face of overwhelming odds. The name reflects both the literal flame that often marks their deeds and the unbreakable thread of their bond, which burns even unto death.
Those granted the title wear a crescent-shaped badge forged from mirrored obsidian and inlaid with silver, a symbol of light shining within shadow. It is not a rank but an honor, bestowed sparingly. To date, only three pairs have been named Flamebound, and their names are carved into a black stone pillar within the Sanctum of Threads.
The creation of this honor has reinvigorated morale within the Order, reminding its members that sacrifice is not forgotten and that even in an age of fading divine presence, acts of valor can kindle hope.
Qualifications
Unlike formal ranks, the Flamebound honor cannot be earned through training or years of service—it is awarded only under the most extreme circumstances. Still, those who receive it typically share certain qualifications:
- They must be bonded Sahar and Guardian (only pairs have been recognized to date).
- Proven service to the Order with a history of exceptional missions and unwavering loyalty.
- A final act of selfless sacrifice, often risking or giving their lives to preserve balance or save countless others.
History
he title of Flamebound is one of the newest and most sacred honors within the Order of Arelian. It was created in 477 HE, during a time of escalating magical instability across Tanaria. A catastrophic wild magic surge erupted at the leyline convergence of Veyran’s Hollow, threatening to tear open a rift that would have consumed the surrounding region.
During the chaos, Sahar Lyssan Vale and Guardian Coren Dravik volunteered to hold the line while evacuation efforts took place. For three relentless days, they channeled every thread of their bond, using their magic and strength to keep the rift contained. Witnesses described their final stand as a beacon of light burning against a storm of shadow. When the rift finally collapsed, both were gone, consumed by the arcane backlash, but the region was saved.
In recognition of their sacrifice, the Grand Sahar decreed the creation of the title Flamebound, symbolizing the unbreakable bond that burns even unto death. Their names were the first to be inscribed upon the Pillar of Ash and Light in the Sanctum of Threads, where the honored dead are remembered.
Since its creation, the title has only been bestowed twice more: once upon a pair who sacrificed themselves to seal a demon gate in southern Dhuma, and once upon a pair who diverted a magical storm away from the city of Elim at the cost of their lives.
Though rarely granted, the history of the Flamebound has already become legend among the Order. It serves as a solemn reminder that the greatest acts of heroism are not those that seek glory, but those that choose sacrifice for the sake of all.
