TED-M 4
The High Seas
Yo ho! Yo ho! A Villain Life For Me!Two hundred fifty people try to prepare the largest island in the Nomanisan Bay archipelago for the inevitable attack by Murder World Security forces.Well ... actually ... eight of those 250 are prisoners. They are not going to help. Two of those 250 are Murder World contestants, who may have decided to switch sides in the name of piracy, but are not necessarily going to help the civilians.Five of those 250 were at the convention as "drivers" (bodyguards), and they probably WOULD help except most of them got injured in the big fight against The Astrologer and his minions.Dr. John Evans, one of the convention attendees, is drafting some people from the 200 convention attendees to help him treat the new injuries AND to figure out who among the civilian population are at special risk because they are definitely not metahumans. Can we do that without advanced technological equipment? Dr. Evans acts under the supposition that a majority of this population are likely to be metahumans, whether they know (and admit) it or not, because of what Vicious and Mirabelle Sinjin told everyone earlier in the morning.Easily two thirds of the remaining 220 are "preparing" by desperately trying to get some sleep. That leaves 73 people, only 15 of which have experience in managing group survival on this island, plus the 4 Wyldfire members. Defenses need to be contructed. Food needs to be gathered. Water needs to be desalinated and stored. Weapons need to be recharged. Prisoners need to be more permanently secured. Fire pits need to be dug, reinforced, given chimneys to redirect the smoke into a smokehouse (which needs to be built), and large amounts of supplies need to be laid in. Nets need to be woven and deployed.Mirabelle Sinjin says it cannot be done. It is not possible to keep alive a group this large. She says, quietly but firmly, that if anyone is going to survive then more than three quarters of the group needs to be left to fend for themselves, with an expectation that they will not stand much of a chance. She looks haunted when she glances at the crowd. She says Wyldfire is not The Watchmen, and you cannot save everyone.Killer Croc offers to solve the prisoner problem by eating them.Bitsy Klein, Convention Organizer, looks very unhappy about this. She starts trying to figure out who has the best chance of survival, and how to manage this. She keeps looking at the teenage ushers from her Convention Center staff.Doug Miller, Palmer Tech Representative, is quietly furious. "We WILL save EVERYBODY," he insists, "because that's what Palmer Technologies does!" Doug Miller is not an engineer. He is not a scientist. He is a Public Relations flack. He looks like he is ready to invent a laser gun out of coconuts, using sheer determination and motivational speech to make it happen. The members of Wyldfire, last the GM heard, intended to leave the NPCs to it, while heading for the shorter "volcano" to infiltrate the engine room and take over the entire floating island. Is that still the plan, gentlemen?
Meanwhile, In The Backstage Areas
The hidden places in Murder World are busy as hell, dealing with the complete collapse of the Murder World Event and failure of almost all Contestants to report in. Vicious far exceeded her bag limit, even if we don't have a reliable tally, because the guys used her tagger to "tag" most of the eligible "Prey" and then -- just to be mean! -- Silverwing tagged himself and ran his arm through the fake tree "tag registration" locations until the database collapsed and the machinery inside the tree literally caught fire. Freon is the only Contestant to officially complete the event at all.
Most people would try to weaken a superspeedster by dropping the temperature: make him burn more energy to keep warm. Arcade is going in the opposite direction, literally. He wants to head south, into a storm if possible, into humidity for sure; make it harder for the superspeedster to dump excess heat, make it harder to breathe. Tropical Depression Lana is heading westward toward Hawaii as it builds up to become Tropical Storm Lana; Arcade aims to intersect with it. His architect ((somebody from AIM who is doing an off-the-books test run so s/he does not get shot for failed science; Harness might be a good fit?)) is NOT PLEASED. Murder World can withstand winding up in a tropical depression but is not meant to drive itself into one.
Rán is delighted.
Anyway:
If the party faffs off to the volcano:
Getting inside without being spotted should not be a cakewalk, but if the party can keep their rolls above a 7, then there's a lot of chaos and not a lot of spare time to look around. Arcade is going to send most of his mercenary goons off to set the Nomanisan Bay archipelago on fire. He figures he can just replant it later. He is already losing money on his stock of Targets, which will probably have to be replaced before he can run another event much less start a new Game.
So the odds are going to be with the party, at least until such time as they may wind up in the Stadium Arena with Rán and Negate going at their throats, but very much against the civilians.
If the party sticks around to protect the NPCs:
On the plus side, they can absolutely destroy most of Arcade's armed forces.
And then the GM is going to basically make them take a half a day to get caught up on sleep and so forth.
On the minus side, the delay gives Arcade time to activate a bunch of internal defenses, including locking all his conscripted personnel into a couple of large rooms to bait the adventurers into the Stadium Arena. If the party rolls less than a 15 to stealth around, traps go off. Some of these traps exist only to help Rán and Negate figure out who's where.
USE THE JUMANJI DRUMS. A LOT.
Also, with the extra time: the weather has turned yucky. The island is definitely in motion. You can't go in through the exhaust port because it is currently exhausting. Arcade gets additional street-level villains in gear.

Protagonists
Neutrals/Bystanders
Convention attendees/hostages/kidnap victims:
- John Evans, MD
- Doctors Without Borders
- Had a cousin named Jack who disappeared a few years back while on a DWB trip. Now part of the CCC crowd.
- Bitsy Klein, Convention Organizer
- Doug Miller, Palmer Tech Representative
- Doug Miller is the head of Applied Sciences for Palmer Technologies.
- He is not an engineer. He is not a scientist. He is a Public Relations flack. He looks like he is ready to invent a laser gun out of coconuts, using sheer determination and motivational speech to make it happen.
- approximately 200 total "kidnapped citizens" who were Convention attendees
- Smear:
- Gerd Frank, older Danish woman who does not speak English
- Carsten Frank, teenage son of Gerd
- They can separately create blurry effects in air in a 3 AP dome as if the air is lightly smeared with petroleum jelly (-2 CS to AV), or can work together to cover a 6 AP area with a more intense distortion (-5 CS to AV). This does not actually STOP or DEFLECT an energy beam, but might bend it or diffuse it.
- Gerd has heard the myths of Ran from her grandparents but remembers very little in the way of details. Gerd has been a gardener since she was young and has mostly organized the few herbs and crops that the "prey" harvest from the jungle or grow for their own survival purposes.
- Carsten speaks English better than his mom. Their native language is Danish.
- Arcade bills Carsten as "Smear" and does not advertise Gerd on the posters.
- Mirabelle Sinjin
- Gray catgirl, college student, daughter of Tafey Anne Sinjin-Gironde who disappeared February 5th, 2006.
- Kidnapped by Catastrophe on contract. Lex Luthor meant to wind up with her but Simon Kincaid instead did a quick auction of her and some other meta prisoners. Arcade picked her up to be one of his jungle-themed attractions. He did not expect the daughter of a biochemist to be trained by Vigilante in dirty fighting. She has been careful to appear like a soft target and use lots of traps and environmental hazards to prevent "contestants" from ever getting near her, without drawing attention to how hard she is to find.
- Arcade bills her as "The Panther".
- The "Prey" or "Target" set include a total of 30 people, half of whom have been trying to protect the other half from Contestant predation.
- Jaqstones
- Comanche
- Shades
- Callisto
- Mazikeen
- Vicious
- She has throwing knives and a high Dex and less of a fear instinct than Parker. She definitely recognized Thunderstrike as a biker gang dude who got arrested and never turned back up. She is not sure if she feels like hooking back up, but she definitely does not feel like not hooking back up. Has he got a good thing going, and does she want a piece of it?

- Killer Croc
- The heroes came up with some great Persuasion for Croc to switch sides. He is not merely keeping an eye on the civvies, he is actively in favor of dismantling the entire "Murder World" setup. Some of that is because the earnest blue-eyed Boy Scout over there guaranteed that Croc will get the money he needs to buy the old plantation, and will help him get the worst parts of the renovation done. A lot of it is because the whole quartet of Capes 'n' Cowls are treating Waylon like he's a good guy at heart, a guy stuck in a set of bad breaks, who packs a fantastic punch. It's reminding him of everything he dreamed of becoming in his "sideshow wrestler" career.
- He will cheerfully talk about eating people. He is not, in fact, a cannibal. He is playing to the stereotypes about himself to keep trouble at a respectful distance. He will not expect the heroes to see through it, or treat him decently.
- These numbers do not count the 16 prisoners who were initially guards (formerly disguised as catering staff, Convention Security personnel, and Freakshow protesters), half of whom managed to get away during the move, leaving 8 still contained.
- These numbers also do not count the Astrologer and his minions, currently prisoners, and some of them also patients in need of medical supervision.
Competitors
- The Astrologer and his Zodiac minions
- See darkc_animated page 39.
- In our version, he's a gadget-blaster. He has a staff that does stuff. He used to be a toymaker, so traps and stuff should be a good option.
- He also has goons wearing black bodysuits with stars on them, named after the astrological signs, with the sign on the chest in silver.

Environmental Clues
At some point (in daytime), a couple of the civilians will get a good look at the surrounding foliage. One gets very excited. The other gets very upset. This island should not exist! Really!
Plants include:
- Pisonia Grandis, sometimes known as "the grand devil's-claws" has edible leaves.
- Erythrina variegata, "Coral Tree," with the red flower clusters. The bark and seeds have narcotic properties. Leaves and bark contain a poison called erythrinine
- "Cynometra ramiflora," an evergreen tree, is not edible but its wood makes good fuel. Very little will grow directly under it.
- Guamia mariannae, also known as "Guamia", is a very definite clue that this island belongs in the Marianas Islands archipelago. Which is definitely not where it is. It's evergreen, and its fruit are eaten by birds and bats, but the only use people will have for it is "HEY WTF".
- Pinus virginiana, scrub pine, should not be growing here at all. If it is, it ought to be crowding out the plants native to the tropical dry forest. Instead, it's growing mostly on the three southern peninsulas, especially the center one which has rolling hills and a lot of wind exposure that messes up the soil quality. It appears near the shores of the outer peninsulas, but not much inland.
If for some reason the civilians do not get a chance to discover any of this -- all of it a clue that the island was constructed from parts, and moves around, and has undergone some kind of enhanced growth cycle -- then Mirabelle doesn't know the names of plants but can point out a few useful ones from her year and a half of experience.

- Jumanji Drums
- Nocturnal alien rainforest on Ambient-Mixer
