Tormund

The Hero-Martyr

When one imagines the background belonging to a Seeker of the Golden Grain, they probably don't imagine one resembling that belonging to Tormund, the Martyr of Heroes.

Personal history

Tormund was born in Brunnhild of the Crimson Sands, which would later come to be known as the City of Sin. He grew up a farmhand alongside his brother Talon. His brother Talon would attempt to convince Tormund to leave Brunnhild with him as adventurers. Tormund would not, but Talon did and eventually Tormund stopped hearing back from his brother and he knew that his worst fear had come true: Talon was dead. In the ensuing years however, Tormund had managed to purchase his family's home and farm as well as marry the daughter of the town butcher, Elaine. The two would have their beloved daughter, Amelia. When news of Talon's death officially reached Tormund, he was flung into a downward spiral of drinking and gambling the family's money away. Eventually the farm would fall into disrepair, and after many failures of trying to get Tormund out of these destructive habits, Elaine decided she would take Amelia and leave Tormund until he could fix what had broken inside of himself. Devastated at her announcement, Tormund went out drinking and got into a fight with a Gnome from town named Tobin Oswin after Tobin approached him accusing him of something, not that Tormund could make it out in his state. Tormund then beat Tobin so violently he would later go blind from the damage he received. On his drunken return home, Tormund would find his home burning to the ground with Elaine and Amelia still inside. He rushed in to save them, but in his drunken state couldn't manage to save them, and the pair perished in the fire. Tormund would have perished himself if not for the interference of one of the city guard, a young man named Erow'ay. The city then came to hold Tormund responsible for starting the fire and the death of his family. Tormund, angry and confused, fled Brunnhild.
The next few years of Tormund's life are lost to historians as no witnesses or confidants of Tormund from this time are known; what is known has been pieced together by his fellow Seekers of the Golden Grain. Tormund seems to have fled to different parts of the Crimson Sands and received his monastic training by a man known as 'Creature'. The pair seemed to not end their relationship on amiable terms, and Tormund found his way into the Torendal Valley, where he would be captured by the Cult of Hokajin, and finally be saved by the group that would come to be known as the Seekers of the Golden Grain. For a more complete account of Tormund and his adventures with the Seekers, please read The Full & Extended History of the Seekers of the Golden Grain, by Dreezus Kodak the Faun.
Suffice it to say, that Tormund would become the caliber of man the world needed to bring it hope and a new start. When slain in battle against Tordenkrone, Tormund unknowingly was setup as a message of resilience in the face of adversity, and paved the way for the coming era - the Years of Heroes - and accordingly was known from then on in the annals of history, as the Hero-Martyr.
