History
Phandalin was founded by failed prospectors and treasure hunters seeking for the legendary Wave Echo Cave and the SpellForge said to be inside. It was believed that the Ma'anrak legend was to be found somewhere near where the town would develop. After enough generations of treasure seekers came by the area looking for their fortune, they setup an originally ramshackle town to serve as a base of operations and home they could return to in order to continue on their search with greater ease. In the meantime of searching for Wave Echo Cave, the mining trade developed in Phandalin and became the primary profession and economic export of the town. This is what the town was known for from its founding in 643 YD up until 845 YD.
It was in 845 YD when adventurers Chad Embergaze and Boblin the Goblin in their seeking out Wave Echo Cave introduced the Modra Kuze tribe of Goblins into the town. This was a harsh adjustment for the locals to make, but Boblin took the role of spearheading the assimilation. After the town came to permit the Morda Kuze tribe well enough, Boblin then incorporated his home tribe, the Chemelasi tribe, into the town as well. Though Phandalin was hesitant to accept even more Goblins, they discovered that once you'd grown used to the presence of some Goblins, you were prepared for just about any number of Goblins afterwards. Phandalin quickly became known as the Goblinoid town of Ashguard, which, in addition to its presence in the mining trade, is its primary reputation to the time of writing this account.

Architecture
Originally founded on Human and Dwarven ramschakle "essentialist" attitudes toward architecture, as time went on it became more and more sophisticated in its buildings. Primarily thanks to the increase of Dwarven presence as the mining trade developed further and further in Phandalin. However, with the introduction of such a large Goblinoid population, the town returned largely to a feel of ramshackle, though with a distinctily Goblinoid flavor.
