Morty, the Mortician
If it smells like dirt, looks like dirt, and tastes like dirt, most times it's probably dirt; but in this case it's actually just Morty.

Personal history
Morty's has lived two, very seperate lives. He was born in the Human-kingdom of Fleeth and its capital city of Alkurgeryen, as Niilo. Niilo was a royal assassin for Fleeth's crown.
He fought in the resistance force against Vecna, but was slain in battle along with the larger Fleethian military. Trapped by Vecna's Obelisks of Soul-chaining, Niilo wandered the Ethereal Plane for centuries. While there, he, like all other spirits trapped in the Ethereal Plane for long enough, heard tale of the "Forbidden Graveyard". A place said to restore lost souls to life. Niilo was much more grounded than the spirits around him, and regarded the Graveyard as nothing more than wishful thinking. However, after centuries of wandering the Ethereal Plane, he found himself arriving at the Forbidden Graveyard. He was then able to make a pact with the Graveyard who tasked Niilo with putting more souls in the ground when he returned. From that day forward, anyone Niilo would kill, their soul would be brought to the Forbidden Graveyard, to languish in misery there forever: which granted the Graveyard its power. After accepting the terms of this deal, Niilo was returned to life. However, after so many centuries of wandering the spirit world, he did not remember who he had been in life. He wandered the Ashlands, nameless, for a time, until he managed to find himself north in Ashguard. Some kind strangers took pity on the seemingly confused man, and brought them back to Tycheron. Armed only with the knowledge of what he must do for the Graveyard, he found employment at the Waywent Shrine and Mortuary as its undertaker. The Graveyard accepted this very literal interpretation of its words, but quickly made it clearer to Morty, as he now called himself, what it had meant. Still, a deal was a deal and Morty was upholding his end by being the mortuary's mortician; so the Graveyard extended the deal further. Morty could keep working as an undertaker to prolong his life, but if he would actually kill people, as the Graveyard had originally intended, it would grant him magical powers. Morty agreed. So he took on another persona, that of Muerta. As Muerta, he would prowl the streets of Tycheron at night, mostly the Labyrinth district, and find people already dying and put them out of their misery. Although a strange phenomenon would take place whenever he donned the persona of Muerta: Visions of memories of his previous life would flash before his eyes. Something about killing slowly restored memories to Morty. Despite not wanting to kill people, this seemed to be the only way to learn who he truly was. So Muerta became as big a part of his life as Morty.
It was on these nights as Muerta that he would be spotted by Mask, the leader of the forthcoming Thieves Guild. Along with his invitation into the guild, Morty was given a diadem, said to belong to the Senua Voldren, daughter of the Regent, Yorick Voldren. This was the beginning of the "entry exam" of the Thieves Guild. For a more complete recounting of Morty's adventures with the Thieves Guild, please read the WorldAnvil page 'The Thieves Guild'.
After his adventures with the Thieves Guild, Morty had gained another interest: The SpellForge. So, he went to where Wave Echo Cave was located, and started to found a small town; a town he called, 'Mortyville'. The Thieves Guild would incorporate Mortyville into their operations, with it serving as their third official branch after Tycheron and Phandalin. This also allowed the Guild to keep a close eye on the SpellForge. This incorporation worked: for a time. However, thanks to the increased foot traffic out of Mortyville, the wider public eventually discovered Wave Echo Cave and the SpellForge. This news shot through all of Ashguard in a day, and the rest of the nearby regions not much longer after that. Ashguard Garrison claimed Wave Echo Cave, the SpellForge, and even Mortyville, claiming they could not allow agents of the Ashlands to have access to them. After some political turmoil carefully navigated by Regent Senua Voldren, the SpellForge was surrendered to Ashguard proper, and Mortyville was returned to Morty and the people living there. However, Senua declared it renamed to 'Ma'anrak' in honor of the people who had once lived there, constructed the SpellForge, and fell to the same enemy they now face: The Ashlands.
Morty continues serving as Lawgrave of Ma'anrak (which he still refers to as Mortyville), taking careful consideration of the town's cemetery. He still is in regular communication with the Tycheron branch of the Thieves Guild, and makes occassional trips there to meet with his old friends.
