Nagy Kapu "Grand gate"
A Nagy Kapu, the grand gatehouse between the collapsed cave and the Crown Parish of FeketeTo', is a towering gothic relic of a bygone era. Once the main entrance to the city, it now serves a purely ceremonial purpose, but its presence still looms large. Built between the towering rock walls of the cavern, the structure is both menacing and awe-inspiring, a testament to the ancient power and dark beauty of the drow who constructed it.
Architecture and Design- Towering Spires: Rising high into the cavern’s ceiling, the gatehouse is adorned with several spires, each intricately carved with eerie symbols of drow dominion. These spires are adorned with sharp, jagged edges and protruding gargoyles shaped like spiders and fanged beasts. The two tallest of towers hold a glowing, purple crystal, which pulses faintly, casting an ominous light over the entire structure.
- Dark Stone and Iron: The walls of Nagy Kapu are built from deep black stone that seems to drink in the light, making the gatehouse appear even darker than the surrounding cavern. Heavy, cold iron reinforces the gates and battlements, giving it a fortress-like appearance. The gate itself is made of two sets of massive double doors on either side of the central stream, once used to defend the city from invaders. They stand permanently open but exude a foreboding presence, their ornate carvings of ancient battles still visible.
- Portals and Symbols: Lining each side of the two roads that lead away from the gatehouse are faintly glowing runes etched into the stone, marking the area where the portals from the other parishes deposit travelers. These glowing, ethereal symbols are constantly shifting, flickering between the old tongue of the drow and a magical language unknown to most, hinting at the depth of the enchantments that still bind the portals to this place.
- Ceremonial Aesthetic: The gatehouse's ceremonial function is emphasized by the double archways on either side of a stream spanned by a low bridge, crowned with a depiction of a drow matriarch wielding a staff. Beneath each one, a massive spider spreads its legs across the facade, symbolizing the drow’s connection to their dark gods and ancient traditions. Along the sides of the gatehouse, carved reliefs tell the story of the city's founding, wars with enemies. oddly, most of the war scenes are set in desert climes.
- Lanterns and Gargoyles: Lining the path to the gatehouse are iron lanterns filled with greenish, magical flames, flickering dimly in the cavernous air. High above, stone gargoyles perch, their eyes seemingly following travelers as they pass, as if enchanted to detect threats or trespassers. Their fanged mouths appear frozen mid-scream, as though they once heralded a battle but have since been silenced.
- The Collapsed Passage: Before the gatehouse, across a pool of water into which the two roads submerge, the remnants of the collapsed cave can be seen. Large boulders and rubble block what was once the main road to the surface, a jagged jumble that contrasts with the otherwise smooth, natural cavern. A faint draft flows through the cracks, a reminder of the physical way to the world beyond, now lost to FeketeTo'.
- Portal Platforms: Just outside the gatehouse, twelve (12) circular platforms mark where the magical portals stand. These portals glow faintly with an eerie, cloudy, semi-transluscent purple when in activated, briefly brightening and lighting up the darkened space with swirling light as travelers depart/arrive, before fading back to a dull shimmer. Three (3) of these are active, seven (7) are inactive, and two (2) are visibily damaged and appear unusable. Each platform is marked with a different symbol representing the place it connects to, allowing travelers to distinguish where they’ve come to/from.
- The air around Nagy Kapu is cold, with a dampness that clings to the skin. The water intermitanly drips from the cavern ceiling far above in the darkenss, adding to the uneasy atmosphere with random splatters around, and on, anyone walking underneath. The central stream babbles over a stony streambed, not loud, but a jarring unnerving interruption to the quiet of the cavern. Despite being merely ceremonial now, the gatehouse is a place of reverence and dread. It stands as a reminder of the city’s past and the power the drow once wielded when FeketeTo' was whole. Travelers arriving through the portals often feel a mix of awe and trepidation as they step into the shadow of this ancient, towering structure.
