Camaxan

Back when I participated in the club, one of my regular partners was a Camaxan by the name of Ahuilel. She was a superb hunter, great instincts, and an even better shot. Hell of a tracker too, she just had to pull her earplugs off and she could hear our quarry like it was right beside us. We just had to be sure not to fire off when she had her ears out to listen. A lesson one of the new kids learned the hard way when he accidentally fired while she was concentrating on listening. I swear, I thought she was going to gut him or tear his face off with those long claws of hers right then and there. We barely managed to separate the two before more permanent harm was done...

The Camaxans are a mammalian species that evolved on the tidally locked world of Xochi'yan , where the species came into a strong warrior culture early in its development and its tenants have pushed the species to the heights of ambition. While Camaxan warriors remain lauded, even in the modern age, and their military is respected in size and ability, it is more likely that outsiders will see Camaxan soldiers in the form of mercenaries that travel the galaxy in search of fortune.

The species is now somewhat known for being the administrators of Humanity's second trial by fire upon their original scattering after the Paradise War, when a fleet of human warships translated into Camaxan space. The presence of warships so close to a populated world caused the Camaxan's to respond with force and no questions. but they would find themselves quite surprised when the human ships put up stiff resistance. Given a concerted effort to wipe them out, the humans could never have won of course, which made it all the more confusing for those humans when the Camaxan warships suddenly broke off and opened communications, asking what the humans required to maintain themselves and their ragtag fleet. Their willingness to now help the Humans was a shock, and naturally not trusted, but eventually, the Humans would learn that it was genuine.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Having once evolved from a flying mammalian race of predators, into a knuckle-walking early-tribal species, and then into the upright species we know today, the form of the Camaxans bears the signposts of all those forms of existence.

Humanoid overall, they are much taller than the human average and broad to match, their most noticeable features are their incredibly long arms, which combined with their notably long fingers, reach past their knees. Their natural posture leds the species to look much smaller than it actually is, curling up amongst itself, unless they're threatened or challenged and thus causing them to rise to their full height.

On the head their most notable features are their large pointed ears and the broad upturned nose that was once the species' main method of sensory input outside of their hearing. Around the shoulders and neck, the species has a sort of naturally occurring fur cover, which can form a sort of collar. That amount of fluff is often seen on the Tlathui more than the other ethnicities of the Camaxans.

Genetics and Reproduction

Camaxans gestation period is about six months, and give birth to live young. These young spend several months blind and largely immobile, being carried by their mothers.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Family is very important to the species, and they very rarely spread out; leading to cities being populated by the many, many, generations of the same families with only minute variations.

The length of one's lineage and any notable ancestors are terribly important for social interaction, social placement, and general class movement. You won't get far without the family history to back you up. If your family history doesn't have any shining examples, simply having a long history is often an acceptable substitute, as long as there are no glaring irregularities or bad apples.

Civilization and Culture

Major Organizations

The Tricolor League is a unified government formed by the Camaxans during their information age, based around the alliance of the major governments of Xochi'yan. Technically the governments remain separate, but the League has been in operation so long that the component governments are now treated largely as divisions of government similar to a country or state.

History

According to the historiographic record, they were a rather peaceful collection of tribes that rapidly spread due to their natural adaptations and their ingenuity. Xochi'yan is a vibrant world, filled with life and plenty, and thus the largely carnivorous species always had ample prey to hunt, which likely fueled their spread as they chased food over large distances. All the while they were realizing that something wasn't quite right. On half the planet, days were getting long, while the other half was finding them heading in the opposite direction.

The planet did not become tidally locked until after the species developed a sedentary society, but once it had the Camaxans found themselves in near constant conflict. Xochi'yan was now divided into three regions due to its rotation and angle. The first was the permanently sunny and warm "dawn" (or "Tlath") side, a band of permanent "dusk" (or "Xolot" around what is now considered the planet's prime meridian and a side bathed permanently in cool "night" (or "yohua").

As the planet's ecosphere adjusted to the new change, the plenty the species had known was thrown into chaos. Certain traditional prey species died off, or their migratory routes fell apart and they could no longer be found in the numbers they used to. Cities began to starve, and the species' development scattered in every direction.

On the Dawn side of the world, the development of advanced agriculture and animal husbandry skyrocketed forward, growing the cities underneath the white-gold sky to vast sizes. Those on the night side of the world, now plunged permanently into darkness, found that many nocturnal creatures were still available for their tribal hunts, enough to sustain some but not all. They would compete fiercely for prey and hunting grounds, and through that conflict would sharpen themselves.

Those beneath the red band that now surrounds the prime meridian of the planet found themselves equally caught in the middle as they lacked the sunlight to grow large crops, but lacked the living food options as well. When one does not have something, they turn to those that do, and the Xolotli Camaxans were no different. Much more sparsely populated, they took to raiding produce stores in daylight, and cattle rustling and poaching in darkness.

In a strange twist, these raids would make the Xolotli a middle man of sorts, where both day and night sides would simultaneously attempt to build up their defenses to prevent the theft of their products and to acquire what they didn't have by approaching the "border folk" (as they were referred to at the time) and engaging in trade to get what was stolen from their solar opposite.

Over centuries, as all three sides acclimatized to this new state of their home and their new methods of survival, the state of casual war became the norm. A sort of running conflict that was seemingly accepted as a part of life across most of the planet. Even into the Camaxan industrial age, as nations subsumed cities and tribes, and the differences between the people living under the many-colored sky began to become more and more homogenized with less of a clear separation to them all, this relaxed attitude towards conflict would continue.

Even as national alliances formed, you could find that two member nations develop a casus belli and act upon it. Unlike in most other species, this would not dissolve the alliance, or see the offending members ejected, instead simply adding another layer to the political situation of that power bloc. One might assume that the tensions that war brings would make such alliances impossible, but they remain so due to the traditional method of war practiced by the Camaxans. Tied to their ancient roots as a competitive hunter society, war between the species was fought with great regard to goals, presentation, and what one considers acceptable targets. That is to say, non-warriors were not often included in battle, and when they were it was most often incidental. So much so that the concept of "xōchitl cemelle", or Flowered Peace, which is the concept that only those that take up the mantle of war can be pierced by it's blade. This very concept is instrumental to the formation of the Camaxan's current unified government.

Their particular strengths and strong intraspecies loyalty have served the Camaxans well on the brutal stage of galactic politics, and when they reached the stars they practically exploded in size. Taking vast swaths of space for their own and instantly creating tension with their direct neighbors. While many armed conflicts have been fought by the Camaxans, three specific conflicts stand out as emblematic of the species roll in the galaxy. The oldest would be the First Petal War and then the War of Hydraxas Rings, which served as the Camaxan introduction to war on the galactic stage and the galaxy's introduction to the Camaxan way of war, respectively.

Currently, most of the galaxy has somewhat cool political and diplomatic relations with the species, as the Camaxans prefer to stick to themselves. However, they do not actively pursue a policy of isolationism.

The Camaxan's sudden friendship with the human governments is somewhat of a shock, given how the two species actually first encountered each other. Even moreso, considering the long history of brutal warfare the rest of the galaxy has with the Camaxans, where events like that did not appear.

The colors of the Camaxan umbrella ethnicities (The Tiathui, Yohual, and Xolotli), are thought to be adaptational hold overs from the days of the species being a flight predator adapting to the skies themselves. When the planet became tidally locked, the skies notably changed, and the population living under those skies quickly adapted.

The archeological record would indicate that early Camaxans had pale blue hair and purplish skin.

Espers are named after a series of gods in the Camaxan religion, who are described similarly to the human idea of a coven of witches.
