Espers
I've carried this little charm with me ever since I joined the military. An Esper gave it to me, just after I got out of basic, and I've not let it leave me since. It's lucky, you see. No bullet will hit me while I wear it, or so she said, and she hasn't been wrong yet.
While scientists of all species pull apart the world in an attempt to understand it, the realm of the Nösphere remains full of questions that seem impossible to answer. The only ones that seem to understand it in any meaningful way would be the Espers, a phenomenon found across all sapient species, and even they aren't able to add any insights.
Espers are individuals that are able to, in some aspect, access the Nösphere through indiscernible means. Some only need a thought, others; a gestur, and others still some sort of ritual or geas, but in the end the laws of the universe bend all the same.
Most Espers don't really have control or any amount of say in how their abilities manifest. Should they present as a bird of fire, starlight spears, or invisible gravitational anomalies, they're likely stuck with it. This, like most things surrounding Espers and the Nösphere, is barely understood and the fact that it is not a completely solid rule upsets that even further.
Espers vary in ability, and are graded for more quantifiable classification. The data points that go into this are wide-ranging, and frankly somewhat ad hoc, being anything from the pure power output, the range, the amount of physics breaking that the abilities can do, etc.
Every species has their own classification system and names for Espers. The Camaxanas name them off of a coven of gods of magic within their religion, while the Chersoile name them after notable historical figures. Humans use the ancient Latin Alphabet, which provides a system that is simple to understand if somewhat lacking in creative flair.
Alpha is the highest rank, while Epsilon is the lowest. Fun fact, the dissapearance of Kel is hypothesized to have been caused by a group of Alpha-level Espers, or perhaps even just one that came into its powers for but a second moment before vanishing.
