United Coalition of Free Systems
The United Coalition of Free Systems proved capable of functioning past the Silence. The once former colonial entity of the Colonial Earth Empire removed its shackles while the United Republic collapsed. Currently, they are a mostly functioning democracy. However as they have grown, so too has the crushing weight of banal bureaucracy that now spreads to all assets of coalition life. Poisoning influences from wealthy guilds and ventures compete, eating out the hive of the democracy from inside. Meanwhile, agitators and radicals are bolstered on each side, both by the Colonial Earth Empire and the Union of Socialist Systems. The Red Sun Commonwealth, Terminus Systems and Pacifica at their borders make for dangerous neighbors.
Their strongest alliance is with the Musura Federation, though it is mainly a defensive relationship, coupled with an open trade agreement. Both governments interfere with one another, each stoking the flames of growing political movements from different angles.
And yet, the United Coalition perseveres, strengthened by its wealthy reserves of wealth and its talented population. The remnant sometimes leans a bit too heavily on their support from the Be'Teu Order to enforce their laws and keep the peace within the systems, and both have been balked at for not trying to help those oppressed on their borders, under the thrall of various corpo planets in the Great Expanse or in the throes of civil uprisings and war in Pacifica.
Structure
Membership to the UCFS must be approved by the planet's populace seeking entry, and those within the Remnant are obligated to a modicum of rules enforced by the Coalition Congress, the legislative body of the government. These rules include the need for a democratic system, paying tithes to the central government in order to maintain security and inter-system infrastructure.
Political Parties
The Remnant is primarily governed by the Coalition Congress, a senate of sorts with elected members of each planet. The Assembly is headed by a Vizier, who is elected by the body and is the face of the Coalition executive branch. The coalition has a formed all manner of coalitions in the Assembly.
- Renaissance: The Renaissance party is the mostly liberal democratic insution that makes up a majority of the Assembly and governmental body. They mostly are concerned with the continuation of the UCFS status quo, and are slow to change their policy or party views. The vast majority of people have mostly adopted a pro-galaxy stance, seeking further negotiation with their neighbors, while maintaining their own distinct independence. Renaissance can absolutely be qualified as a "big tent" political entity, combining aspects of the other three major coalitions.- Industrialists: The Industrialists are primarily concerned with the inclusion of powerful merchant guilds and corporations to gain a legitimate voice in the assembly. These are represented by planets like Mordana, whose local governments consist of oligopolies of corporate power. The Industrialists recieve outside support from the more capitalists groups, especially the Colonial Earth Empire, certain parties of the Musura Federation, and the oligarchs of the Commonwealth.- Unionists: The Unionists are the growing left-wing coalition of socialists, syndicalists, and worker's unions. They have a growing level support, especially from planets like Koen and Europa Prime, who have more democratic governing processes. They regularly have funds raised for them by interested parties in the Thondor Cooperative, the Union of Socialist Systems, and some of the unions and guilds in the Commonwealth.- Jury Party: The Jury Party are an increasing power of isolationists and reactionary groups within the Coalition. They are increasingly becoming wary of their local nation being used as a political battleground. The constant fighting on their borders are giving rise to an increasing amount of militarists. Their votes are usually torn between both parties, and they usually vote in favor of more consolidation under a singular government. It is rumored that the Jury Party is stock piliing weapons smuggled into the coalition. It is rumored they are funded by Fourth Columnists in the empire, like the House of Steel.
The United Coalition has a very small standing military, and mostly relies on the local systems and their militias to defend their territories. This has led to the over-militarized fringe nations, especially those bordering Pacifica and Corporate Space. Meanwhile, the more interior planets, like Koen have mostly dissolved their military forces and relegated them to primarily security and policing. Inter-system policing is handled by the Rangers, a group appointed by the congress to handle the most egregous crimes against the coalition. Many rangers are regularly seen working along side the Be'Teu Order.
Culture
History
The origin of the Grand Republic can trace its roots back to the early days of travel and trade that occurred in the unoccupied regions now known as Free Space. This region of space was resource rich, full of inhabitable planets, and unlike the rest of of the Mid Rim, was almost entirely unoccupied by prior settlers or colonists. The region quickly turned into a goldmine for prospectors and land speculators. It also proved as a growing shelter for those practicing Asceticism, as imperial and musuran entities continued to push ascetics out of their realms.
Free Space became known as a melting pot of all manner of cultures and peoples. Many of these people were seeking a new life with promises of riches. The wealthiest of these were the land prospectors from the Panem Region of the Empire. Some were impoverished noble houses. As time went on, these regions developed their own unique culture. The untapped planets of both Free and Sovereign space, and the unrestricted trade allowed with their neighbors meant wealth for the founders beyond their dreams.
This wealth was not purely held by just wealthy merchants and capitalists either, but also by powerful guilds and religious sects, by worker syndicates and mining co-ops. Far from the core, they had long self-governed their own planets and systems. Out in Free Space, they also needed to form their own militias and private navies, fighting against piracy, rogue corpo-entities and aggressive cartels out of Wild Space. The raiding Thondorians were also a growing pain that led to a growing armed network of professional soldiers separate from the United Republic.
The officials of the United Republic turned a blind eye to this behavior. It was less that they wanted to encourage the behavior, but more so that the United Republic lacked the funds to protect the far flung planets. The United Republic saw it as a means of keeping the peace in the outer rim, using the professional soldiers out of Straatos and Illyria to police the larger area, and keeping the larger region under the fold of the old republic.
As the centralization of the old republic began to form what would become the empire, so would the resentment of these far flung colonies too begin to grow. Inspired by the Commonwealth, secret political clubs with the goal of seperation began to form on both the Net and planetside, especially on Europa Prime. It's rumored that some of the funding behind the outer rim insurgencies at the time comes from these political clubs.
As the Second Trade War waged throughout the Mid and Outer Rim, it pitted many neighbors against one another in ways they had not before. It also showed the powers of Free Space that they, along with those in Sovereign Space, had a lot more autonomy than they thought they had previously. This also established more beneficial relationships between the Thondorians and those in Free Space against the Musurans who threatened to eclipse them all in the absence of the old republic.
The establishment of the Empire drove many into open revolt. What began in Sovereign Space soon inspired more and more systems in Free Space, and it was not long before even Illyria was in open revolt against the Empire. In 842, political leaders from Chandrill to Illyria met in secret on Straatos. It was there that they formed the charter of the Republican Remnant. The initial founders still believed that the Empire could be reformed back into the United Republic.
For nearly a decade, the Grand Republic fought side-by-side with the Union of Socialist Systems against the Empire. In 850, the Grand Republic would be formally recognized as the current entity as it exists today. The loose alliance of systems would finally form into one semi-centralized government. They shed blood on many worlds across the Mid Rim in their struggle. What would start as a civil war in the birth of the empire, would soon evolve into a brutal struggle for independence. For over a decade, imperial soldiers would struggle against a surprisingly well organized militia organized by the independent frontiersmen that called Free Space home.
In 858, exhausted and damaged, the Empire finally withrew from Free Space, and the republican remnant were free to govern their own space. In the early years, the republic would struggle against their aggressive neighbors. The Zym Hegemony and the Zlathan systems nearby would be constant targets of aggressive republican prospectors. Their alliance with the Union of Socialist Systems would wither into a semi-cold war, that would last until the silence. WIP The silence would prove successful for the systems of Free Space. Seperated from their former enemies and rivals, the Republican systems would finally establish a formal centralized governance. As the Union began to open gates, they first established communication with the Republic. This created a mutually beneficial relationship between the two nations once again, despite the grumblings of the elite on Illyria and within corpo entities like Magral Industrial.
