Baran aka Loyen (which means God save her) was married until his wife was killed by the Molkai, the descendants of Queremez.
Baran has a rich history of saving the babies who are abandoned to the ice cats by the people of the kingdom of Scarlet, whose religion demands them to abandon certain children to the giant Ice Cats, if the kids survive and have the right physical characteristics, they are put into the temples of Scarlet as objects of worship. They are chained to the altar and are well cared for, fed clothed and given the best of everything, but they cannot leave the place of being worshipped and of being the ones who invite the sacrifices that fund the government of Scarlet.
