Dorialia, Queen of the Currents

Dorialia, Queen of the Currents

History

Dorialia was born about twenty-four years ago, within a small mermaid collective in the Gulf of Relics area. From a very young age, she demonstrated a special sensitivity to magic and song: her voice, more melodious than that of her peers, could calm schools of fish, attract dolphins, and even calm the gentle currents of the surface tides. The priests immediately noted this aptitude, sending her to the College of the Voices of the Waves and introducing her to the group of young people they trained.   Her education was rapid and extraordinary: Dorialia was not only a brilliant student, but also a curious girl, open to the world, and gifted with boundless compassion. During her sacred chanting rehearsals, her teachers witnessed that the tides themselves responded to her voice, shifting sand and seaweed in sync with the notes. This extraordinary skill quickly propelled her to the top of the list to become the future "Queen of the Currents."   The moment that changed her life came at nineteen. During a terrible storm that struck the Little Ocean, Dorialia found a vessel broken in two, stranded on a submerged reef. Among the wreckage, a single survivor struggled between life and death: a Knight of Vizad, named Ser Kaelen von Ghord. Despite the risks, Dorialia rescued him, hiding him near a sirenid settlement and nursing him to health. During the days they spent together, amid songs, stories, and long gazes, the two young people fell in love.   The story of their love remained secret for a long time, but when Dorialia was designated by the priests and singers as the new Queen of the Currents (1309 N.E.), word of her relationship with Kaelen began to circulate. Two years later, their son was born, a mermaid with sandy blonde hair and blue eyes, who showed signs of an affinity for clerical magic from his first months. As per tradition, the child was entrusted to a House of Growth, an institution that educates the children of a collective to belong to the whole community and not to a single house.   Today, Dorialia, after her coronation, reigns over Deep Sea City with determination, balancing political responsibilities with her personal feelings and the desire to build a future in which mermaids and surface peoples can live in harmony.

Character and Personality

Dorialia is a young queen, but her age does not mean she is inexperienced. She possesses natural charisma and a voice that captures not only the currents, but also the hearts.
  • Empathetic: She can sense the emotions of those around her, a quality that allows her to deal with even her opponents without losing her composure.
  • Idealist: She firmly believes in the power of alliances, diplomacy, and mutual understanding. For this reason, she is often accused by conservatives of being "too open" to peoples from surface.
  • Determined: Behind her gentle smile lies an unshakable strength. Dorialia does not hesitate to make difficult decisions, and knows how to assert herself when circumstances require it.
  • Visionary: imagines a future where sea and land are not separated by mistrust, but bound by cooperation.
  • At the same time, Dorialia is subject to human weaknesses. She is prone to being guided by emotion, and her love for Ser Kaelen is seen by some as a vulnerability. She also carries the burden of youth: she must prove herself worthy of the title of queen every day, knowing that many elders are waiting for her to make a false move.

    Relationships and Conflicts

  • Ser Kaelen von Ghord
  • The Knight of Vizad is her secret love made public, a special envoy of the Grand Duchy of Vizad. His presence in Deep Sea City strengthens diplomatic ties but fuels criticism from the elders, who see him as having too strong an influence on the queen.
  • The Son, called Laryon
  • The golden-haired mermaid has been entrusted to a House of Growth, but he is already being talked about as a possible clerical prodigy. Laryon is at the center of unconfirmed prophecies, which speak of a "Song of Light" capable of dissolving the darkness.
  • The Still Waters
  • The group of conservative priests is the queen's main political obstacle. They don't recognize her as mature enough to lead the kingdom and criticize her policy of openness to the surface. Some are openly plotting to replace her with a regent chosen from among the elders.
  • The Clear Waters
  • A faction supporting Dorialia, composed of young priests, singers, and many warriors who believe in the need to face the darkness with courage and alliances.
  • Maelirion, Keeper of the Trident of the Abyss: Bearer of the Trident of the Abyss: a legendary warrior and tireless defender, a living symbol of the strength of the sirenid. He may not always agree with the queen, but he protects her faithfully.

  • Abilities and Powers

Dorialia is a unique sirenid, possessing powers beyond those of most of her kind.
  • Song of the Currents (Su): Her voice can alter sea currents, shift the tides, and even calm surface storms. This power grows with the intensity of her emotions.
  • Empathetic Voice (Su): Those who listen to Dorialia are more inclined to trust. This effect is especially evident during public speeches or diplomatic negotiations.
  • Call of the Oceans (Sp): 1/day she can summon allied sea creatures to fight or protect. Dolphins and giant seahorses are particularly responsive to her call.
  • Resist Darkness: For reasons still unknown, contaminated waters slow their effects on her, allowing her to survive longer in tainted areas.
  • Unconscious Clerical Magic: Although not trained as a cleric, Dorialia occasionally manifests spontaneous clerical powers, perhaps inherited from the fate that binds her and her son Laryon.

  • Possessed Items

  • Crown of the Tides: A diadem of white coral and black pearls, it amplifies the range of her song and allows her to communicate over great distances with the singers of the Wave Voices.
  • Dularia's Seashell: A gift from Ser Kaelen, a small shell engraved with Arcane runes. When Dorialia holds it, she can hear the knight's voice wherever he is on Valenor.
  • Mother-of-Pearl Scepter: A royal symbol, not a weapon but a powerful magical focus. It allows the queen to concentrate her singing spells and maintain a steady current around the city.
  • Veil of the Deep: A translucent cloak made from the fibers of an ancient anemone. It grants protection against charm and compulsion spells, making the queen less vulnerable to magical manipulation.

  • Conclusion

Dorialia is much more than a young ruler: she is a figure of transition, a symbol of hope for a people caught between tradition and change. Her personal life intertwined with the knight Kaelen, the birth of her destined son, her voice capable of moving the tides, and the burden of governing a divided capital make her one of the central characters in Valenor's story.   She is loved, feared, criticized, and admired all at once. But above all, she is a queen who sings not only for the sea, but for a future yet to be written.
