The Goblin Infestation
While in the town of Lowry, the party will be told that a group of goblins have attacked the nearby scouting towers. Lyra, the head of the guard and a powerful fighter, is looking for some assistance.
Plot points/Scenes
The party will see that after Lyra is informed of the goblins attack, the children of Lowry are sneaking out towards the Eastern Tower. Lyra will tell the party that the Northern Tower is in serious trouble so she will not be able to make it to the East Tower until that is taken care of. If the party is willing to go check on them, Lyra offers each of them 50 gp. If the party tries to haggle with Lyra she will say that she doesn't have time and dismiss them as she takes off on horseback.
As the party makes their way out to the outpost they can make a DC 12 Survival check to see that there were four small humanoids (the kids) that ran out to the tower. When the tower is finally visible to the party, they will also see that there is a small path down into a valley where one of the guards is gathering water from the stream. On a DC 15 Perception check the party will see three goblins (two standard, one goblin boss) waiting to ambush the guard at the stream, and two more hiding in the trees between them and the tower.
If the goblins were not spotted before the party arrives to the tower they will find that one of the guards has locked themselves into the top of the tower. The party can break in with a DC 12 Slight of Hand check or a DC 14 Athletics check. Upon entering the tower the party will see that the guard that was in the tower has died from poison tipped arrows as well as the four children who are hiding in a chest. After the party has entered the tower, the two goblins waiting to ambush the party will follow and attack them.
After the two goblins have began the fight, one round into combat the other three will join the fight having killed the other guard. If the party kills the goblins, they will see that the last fighter falls they whistle and an owlbear will charge in and try to knock over the tower. The tower will need to have two of it's legs broken to fall, with each leg having 14 HP and an AC of 14. After the first round if the party wants the kids will evacuate the tower but after the owlbear takes damage it will not focus on the tower.
XP Distribution at Eastern Tower:
Goblin Ambush: 200 XP Each (goblin boss and four goblins)
Owlbear Attack: 235 XP Each (owlbear attacking the tower)
Jacob will talk to the party after the fight and if the tower was not taken down he will beg that they don't tell Lyra or the other adults that they snuck out. If the party accepts his offer they Jacob will give them the Lucky Ring which allows the wielder to change a critical failure into a critical success once per day. Regardless of what the party decides the kids will run off as Lyra closes in on the Eastern Tower. Lyra will thank the party for helping and give them their payment.
If the party wants to stay in Lowry for a week then they can train with the guard which will offer the party a special reward. The training will last for the whole week but will be free of charge for whoever wishes to participate. Training will offer the party the chance to gain proficiency in a weapon, shields, or in the athletics or acrobatics skill. If a player does not want to train as a guard for Lyra, they can talk to another champion of Lowry to work something out, possibly teaching another proficiency or a relatively weaker feat.
