Scorchlands
The Scorchlands consist of a large mainland continent as well as several groups of islands that is largely dominated by the forces of Ultribar. Though there are many areas of the nation that make it incredibly easy for peaceful creatures to thrive, there are also forces that be that make even veteran adventurers come close with death. Rich with history dating to before the Great God Wars, the Scorchlands hold many secrets still waiting to be unearthed.
Structure
The Scorchlands are run by a Satrapy with the head being the Krieg family and the Tribune. When a new settlement is brought into the nation, whether forcefully or peacefully, a group of experienced fighters is sent to ensure a smooth transition. Whoever caused the settlement to join the Scorchlands then resides there, typically a military officer or sometimes a entrusted individual hand picked by the ruler of Ultribar. As this person settles in, they pick a handful of candidates, one who shadows them and one day takes over the settlement themselves. All leaders report to the Tribunal who helps keep balance between settlements.
Culture
The Scorched take on a very isonationist standpoint, with few people ever even traveling more than one settlement away in their lifetime. Even the nearby islands that the leaders of the Scorchlands claim they own remain largely unseen to the nations inhabitants. This has lead to a large distrust in the island dwellers and of exotic races that may visit their city. This does not apply to strange magic as many have interacted with a great deal of magic due to the Scorchlands several ponds of magical energy known as "the Source".
Public Agenda
The rulers of the Scorchlands wish to dominate the entire continent and all other land they feel that they have the right to. Historically this has lead to many battles with the people of the Pass, a mountain range where many bandits, orcs, goblins, etc. set up camp after being banished to the dry and brutal environment. Additionally, the smaller settlements are often exploited to make the massses happy, causing the little resistance to the government to come from them.
Assets
Diplomats are essentially trained from childhood to one day join the Tribunal where their years of studies are applied to analyze threats and the best ways to conduct trade and negotiations. This means that largely there is little that is unplanned for causing a great amount of stability in the nation. Along with highly trained diplomats, the Scorchlands also works close with the top intellectuals and the Gauntlet, a large group of do-good knights who seek to protect the weak.
History
Founded by the early cities of Stratum and Ultribar, the Scorchlands were a nation that sought to deliver safety to the people who had in the past few centuries gone through a lot. As more settlements sought to join the Tribunal, citizens were not comfortable with the Tribune not having a member from their town or village. This lead to the Tribunal becoming a organization within the government who worked to advise the leaders of the smaller settlements on what they should do.
As the golden age of the Tribunal began to end, many different settlements were being attacked by forces too daunting for the malitias across the nation. Rumors began to circulate that Ultribar was failing the people and that the Tribune would soon remove them from the Scorchlands and appoint a new city as the capital. The then monarch of Ultribar offered financial support to the then budding Gauntlet, to combat both the possibility of an assassination and the other attacks. Though the other members of the Tribunal were not pleased with this, the people felt better with a trained standing army after the series of attacks from various forces. The monarch told the Tribune that they were the ones who were replacable, killing those who conspired against him and taking control back.
