Duergar

The grey dwarves are a cruel and grim race of slavers who emerged from the Underdark during the flood in an infamous event now known as the Night of One-Thousand Tears.   The Night of One-Thousand Tears was a vicious coordinated attack by the duergar on the settlements of mountain dwarves living in the Ash Peaks. The duergar had noticed the weakness of their surface dwelling enemies in the wake of numerous fiendish attacks during the Flood, and capitalized on this weakness to great effect. This attack, which costed both sides enormous casualties, forced the surface dwarves out of their homes and casted them out into the wasteland. The surface dwarves found places in wasteland settlements and citadels as smiths and stonemasons, but the ancestral grudge remains. To this day, they mutter and grumble about retaking their mountain halls from the "azkhagkil" (meaning "ash-skinned" in Dwarvish, pronounced "azz-gah-keel") duergar.   Today, the holds of the duergar are called the Greyholds . The grey dwarves greedily exploit the resources of the earth and enslave any and all who break their byzantine laws, sentencing them to lifetimes in the mines. Much like the gnomes, the duergar are on the bleeding edge of technological advancement. But unlike the gnomes of Kyarnal Valley, their minds are only set on war. The warlock-engineers of the Greyholds tirelessly work to repair and revive ancient demon engines, so that they might roll out over the sands and lay waste to their foes.
