The Battles of Lexington and Concord

Early in the morning on April 19th, 1775, British forces headed from Boston to Concord to seize arms and powder stored there. They were stopped briefly at Lexington by the local militia, where a brief battle ensued. It was the famous "shot heard 'round the world."   The British soldiers continued on to Concord, where another battle ensued at the Old North Bridge. Eventually, the British retreated to Boston, though a running battle continued the entire way. Some arms were seized from Concord, but most had been removed.   Following these events, the Siege of Boston would continue until March 17th, 1776.
