Khem
Pronunciation: KEM
Map Index: H5, H6
Location: West of the Great Movorian Desert and just to the north of Hoth N’dorgor in West Beledor
Geography: Khem stands as a twisted and broken wasteland, a solemn reminder of its deadly past. Winds relentlessly sweep across the land, often giving rise to enormous choking dust storms. Bare rocky hills jut up from the bare windswept soil. Buried under the deep desert sands, remains of old ruined cities poke through the everchanging dunes. These ruined remnants of the grand old pre-cataclysmic cities, now and lost to the passage of time, hold the promise of great treasures, but are extremely perilous to explore. Only the strongest and most resolute adventurers stand a chance of venturing into these forsaken areas and returning alive.
Primary Population: None
Secondary Population: None
Minor Population: None
Climate: The climate remains oppressively hot year-round, and rainfall is sporadic at best. The flora is predominantly composed of cacti and drought-tolerant thorny plants, bravely enduring the harsh climatic conditions.
Wildlife: Little natural wildlife survives in this inhospitable land. Creatures that wander in quickly succumb to the harsh conditions or incessant chaos storms.
Humanoids: The only permanent humanoid inhabitants of this land are the Ratfolk. These four feet tall rat-like humanoids descend from humans that were corrupted by chaos storms. They escape the effects of the frequent storms by digging hidden emergency storm tunnels throughout their territory so that they can quickly escape to when a chaos storm blows in.
Great warbands of Turoch ride forth from the evil depths of Hoth N'dorgor, crossing Khem under the dark sorcerers' nefarious secret orders.
Monsters: Home to large numbers of twisted and dangerous aberrations, Khem's horrors await foolish travelers who dare to pass into its deadly landscape.
History: The desolate land of Khem, now a wasteland, stood once as a prosperous land that contained fertile cropland and a rich culture. Existing as a tributary to the Movorian Empire, the kingdom prospered despite having to pay heavy taxes. As war broke out, the kingdom found itself drawn into the conflict with the Kishari Empire and many troops from Khem fought on the side of the Movorian Empire.
When the Great Cataclysm occurred, doom fell swiftly on Khem. Parts of the coastline sank in a matter of days while great chaos storms raced across the land, leaving it ravaged and changed forever. Few survived the initial onslaught and of those who did, the corruption of the storms changed their bodies and minds forever.
Today: Khem remains a grim haunted land, full of windblown sand, where danger and threatens at every turn. Numerous dangers lie hidden in the desert's depths, as the chaotic magical energy of the past chaos storms gave rise to horrific monsters and corrupted mutants, lurking to ambush unwary travelers. When night falls, monstrous insects emerge to hunt under the darkened sky. Chaos storms, recognizable by their dark swirling masses and bursts of red and blue lightning, still manifest occasionally, carrying unpredictable and typically negative consequences for those ensnared within.
