Gral’tclon, The Gray Wasteland

Pronunciation: gral-TIC-lon

Map Index: H9, H10

Location: Southwest Nhulokkarnum

Geography: Gral’tclon, once a vibrant expanse within the Chuulonian Empire, now stands as a stark reminder of the lasting devastation caused by the Great Cataclysm. A once-thriving land filled by a savanna teeming with wildlife, violently transformed into a desolate and harsh landscape. The shifting dunes of gray sand, propelled by relentless winds, reshape today's land ceaselessly, while twisted, carnivorous plants eke out an existence amidst the desolation.

Primary Population: None
Secondary Population: None
Minor Population: Veng

Climate: The land's tropical climate subjects the surface to scorching temperatures during the day, making it inhospitable for most creatures. Only those that find shelter in subterranean hideaways can withstand the heat. Nightfall provides some relief, allowing tenacious creatures to venture out in search of sustenance under the cooler night sky. Rainfall is a rarity, and chaos storms sporadically sweep across the land.

Wildlife: Little lives in this cursed land with the exception of insects, rats, lizards, and snakes.

Humanoids: There is no permanent human population in this forsaken land. For most adventurers, and travelers, entry into Gral’tclon is an invitation to a swift death.

A population of Strix, winged humanoids with black skin and demonic looking features, lives in this forsaken land. As a type of chaos storm corrupted humanoid, they find themselves unwelcome and feared in civilized areas and must make their way in areas that humans fear to enter.

Monsters: The towering mountains that rise from the plains now harbor sinister magical entities who prey on any who dare to enter this cursed land. Descendants of these evil creatures still roam the mountains and gray sandy wastelands in search of prey. Most of these creatures attack without warning and are difficult to slay.

History: Prior to the Great Cataclysm, the inland area hosted a thriving savanna that stretched as far as the eye could see. Along the coast, grand cities with their busy ports, served as thriving economic centers of trade. All this was altered by the great war with the Movorian Empire. Attacks by the Movorian navy caused much damage but the real changing point occured when Movorian sorcerors opened rifts to other realms, allowing creatures of unimaginable horror to enter the countryside. However, it was the Great Cataclysm which wrought complete destruction of these western lands of the Chuulonian Empire. Mighty magically induced earthquakes convulsed and fractured the land, causing large portions of the coastline to sink suddenly beneath the waves of the sea. Whole cities drowned within minutes. This violent moving of the earth caused enormous tsunamis, hundred of feet in height, to surge inland, inundating and destroying much of the lower lying areas of the territory. This was closely followed by the unleashing of wild chaos storms that tore through the land with torrents of fire and lightning, decimating nearly all living things in their paths.

Today: The land stands nearly lifeless except for the dangerous nightmarish creatures descended from the monsters gated throughduring the war. Despite the Chuulonian Empire's best attempts to reclaim lost territory, the land's harsh perilous nature and malevolent inhabitants have repelled every endeavor. Past expeditions have met grim fates, dissuading further attempts at resettling these lands. Gral’tclon now stands as a haunting monument to the destructive power of misused magic, that still leave its indelible mark on this land over a thousand years later. Today the scenic sandy shores of Gral'tclon beckon ships at sea to visit, but wise captains know that to land on the coast is to invite disaster.
