Ciara started living in the loft in early 1503 at the tender age of 6, after years of alternating between a warm bed with her father and family, and being turned out on the street to fend for herself. The dockmen - many unmarried and with no known children - looked after her like a surrogate daughter or younger sister, and while they would all gladly take her home with them, they also knew other men would so the same with ill intents, and didn't want to encourage her going home with strange men. In the end, the dockmaster cleared out the loft in the office for her, a space too small for an adult to move comfortable in, but perfect size for a little girl.
