Crankwall
Perched on the edge of a frozen tundra, Crankwall is a marvel of engineering, industry, and resilience. The city thrives where others would wither, its streets warm and its forges roaring, thanks to the divine flame gifted by the Primordial of Fire, Fornax .
Origins and Ingenuity Crankwall was founded by a coalition of dwarves and gnomes—two peoples renowned for mastery over stone, metal, and machinery. Together, they transformed the wealth of natural resources beneath the tundra into technological wonders unmatched anywhere in Primordia. Dwarven mastery of the earth met gnomish genius for invention, giving rise to a society that excelled in craftsmanship, metallurgy, and mechanical innovation. When t The Orb Wars ignited, Crankwall’s leadership saw an opportunity. The city remained neutral, selling weapons, constructs, and technological marvels to all sides. Unbound by allegiances, the crafters of Crankwall grew rich while the rest of the world burned.
The Blessing of Fornax At the climax of the Orb Wars, when The Rending shattered civilizations, Crankwall alone was spared. Impressed by the ingenuity, resilience, and industrious spirit of its people, the Primordial Fornax encased the city in a shield of eternal flame, protecting it from the devastation that consumed the world. As a lasting blessing, Fornax left behind a piece of their own essence in the form of the @flam—a towering spire of blackened basalt veined with ever-burning fire. The Obelisk not only shields Crankwall from the biting cold of the tundra but also fuels the city’s Great Forge and much of its technology.
Industry and Conflict Crankwall's industrious nature is both its strength and its curse. The city's demand for resources has led to the relentless harvesting of the surrounding forests and mountains. This expansion has drawn the ire of a powerful druidic circle known as The Friends of the Grove, who see Crankwall’s ceaseless hunger as a direct threat to the balance of nature. Tensions are high. Skirmishes between industrial prospectors and druidic saboteurs grow more frequent, and the city's leadership debates whether to negotiate, escalate, or innovate their way out of this conflict.
Erebonite: The Unworkable Metal One of Crankwall’s greatest claims to fame is its ability to smelt and forge Erebonite, the densest and most unyielding metal on Primordia. Found deep in the hills of Erebos Ridge and mined by generations of gnomes, Erebonite is too dense to be worked with conventional heat. Only the magically fueled flames of the Great Forge—powered by the Flame Obelisk—can soften it enough to shape. Erebonite is prized for constructing advanced machinery, unbreakable armor, and indestructible vaults. Some whisper that Crankwall is secretly developing weapons or constructs of Erebonite that could shift the balance of power across Primordia.
