Datarum
Datarum is a small, reclusive village nestled between the slow-moving waters of the Sarat River to the east and gently sloping plains and fruit orchards to the west. Humble in size and sparse in resources, Datarum thrives not through might or wealth, but through the quiet strength of its women. The village has long been regarded as a place of mysterious knowledge and subtle power. Men are a rare sight in Datarum; most who are born there either leave in their youth or are simply never seen again.
Demographics
The village has an unusually high birth rate of girls and an unspoken tradition that steers boys away before adulthood—whether by choice or unseen pressure is a subject of local legend.
Government
Mayor Milbeth Tovenares is a wise and weathered herbalist in her mid-sixties, known for her deep connection to nature and her calm authority. She was appointed by King Ricard Saxum, but power in Datarum truly lies with the Drabarni, a matriarchal council of six influential village women. They do not govern with laws, but with consensus, ritual, and tradition.
Members of the Drabarni:
- Eira of the Seeds – Keeper of crop cycles and orchard lore; she claims to hear the dreams of the trees.
- Lunelle Dreamwatcher – Interpreter of dreams and omens; said to have visions during full moons.
- Tasha Greenhorn – Goat-mother and herbal alchemist; teaches young girls animal care and brewing basics.
- Mayor Milbeth Tovenares – Voice of diplomacy, bridge between village and crown.
Industry & Trade
Main Industries:
- Potion Brewing & Herbal Remedies: Datarum is quietly renowned for its tinctures, healing poultices, sleeping elixirs, and rare seasonal brews. These goods are traded via river merchants traveling north or south along the Sarat River.
- Orchards and Agriculture: To the west, modest fruit orchards (apples, plums, pears) provide sustenance and raw material for both food and potion-making.
a
- Animal Husbandry: Small flocks of goats and coops of chickens supply milk, cheese, eggs, and meat for the village.
- Trade: Minimal. Datarum is self-sufficient but does trade some goods for cloth, salt, and rare reagents.
Points of interest
- The Verdant Circle: A ring of standing stones in the orchard glade, used for seasonal ceremonies and herbal rites. Said to be the place where the first Drabarni was chosen.
- Milbeth's Rootcellar: Half-shop, half-laboratory, this earthy cottage is where the mayor stores and prepares many of her renowned brews.
- The River Shrine: A small, vine-covered stone altar beside the Sarat River, sometimes used to leave offerings during the full moon. It is guarded by Naela and visited only in silence.
- The Hollow Tree: A vast old tree at the orchard’s edge with a door-shaped knot. Children dare each other to knock thrice—some say it opens.
Natural Resources
Unique Local Flora and Fauna:
- Moonshade Moss – A silver-veined moss found only near the river shrine. It glows faintly under moonlight and is key to Datarum’s sleep elixirs and calming draughts.
- Whisper Chickens – A rare breed of chicken known for their silence and soft, silky feathers, used in ceremonial cloaks.
- Weeping Plum Trees – An ancient orchard to the west yields fruit only during new moons.
