Throne

Holy capital of the Final Kingdom

The capital of The Final Kingdom and the Duchy of Vizenia, the city of Throne sits atop a great megastructure older than the Kingdom itself overlooking the Vizenian Lowlands and the Conjarra Ocean. Having been inhabited consistently over the course of the past 9,000 years or even more, it is the seat of political, economic, religious, and social power in Sinderlan. With a population in the range of 9 million, it is also the largest city of mainland Sinderlan. It is home to Monarch of the Final Kingdom, as well as one of the Great Augury Houses.
The main megastructure of the city is situated as a monolithical plinth, shaped akin to an enormous birdbath, with entire city blocks atop the main platform. To combat population overflow, the city constructs additional platform discs upon with more structures can be built. These discs, termed "Rings" by the locals, are layered upon one another with enormous ramps, staircases, and elevators connecting them. At the center is the Onyx Ring upon which the Monarch's Starry Palace sits along with the Karst Palace, a more modest dwelling preferred by the reigning King of the Harvest. The fields surrounding Throne are more traditional townships which are considered part of Throne proper, in which the majority of the city's population lives due to the exceeding difficulty of comfortably inhabiting the main structure.
Throughout history, the city has remained a constant. It has endured wars, famines, tsunamis, and even the Starfall itself. Its symbolic nature has become emblematic of the Kingdom's strength and unparalleled longevity as a state, being known the world over. As such, it attracts millions of visitors and transplants annually. It struggles with maintaining the Kingdom-wide policy on housing the poor as more flock to it daily, all the responsibility of the Blind Builder, chief architect of the city. Today, it is viewed as a safe haven from the worst ravages of the Final Famine and the Crag-Hrim War which have gripped the west of Sinderlan, with thousands of refugees flocking to the shadow of the city daily.

Districts

Historians posit that the megastructure originally was divided into districts known as "rings" due to the inner walls on the upper level. However, as population began to inflate, smaller sub-megastructures were build on their own plinths atop the main level, emulating the main structure. Legend has it that the first Upper Ring to be built was the Onyx Ring, upon which the second Starry Palace was built. As the city expanded, more rings were built, each named by the Augurs after a precious metal or stone that was pulled from a bag at random. Prominent Rings include the Emerald, Amber, Ruby, Pyrite, Opal, all of which have storied histories and cultures in their own right. The Upper Rings are home to major cultural centers and government offices such as the House of the Fifth Eon, the Great Augur House of Throne, the Starry Palace, and the Radiant Citadel, headquarters of The Monarch's Bulwark.
Regions within the megastructure are known as Hollows. There are 13 Hollows, all named for the original tribes that allegedly settled the area nearly ten thousand years ago, which made the megastructure their home after they discovered it. Historians do not believe this to entirely be accurate, but local tradition keeps that the tribes inhabited their respective Hollows before building structures on the surface. The Hollows are Grest, Sampton, Hechtian, Lii, Coronn, Virstrin, Sympha, Tythel, Ulan, Vizen, Kelle, Bast, and Krinn. The similarity between the Hollows' names and some Duchies of Finality has led to centuries of debate as to which came first.
The Hollows are not desirable to inhabit from a comfort or convenience standpoint, as they are devoid of sunlight, cramped, and have generally low quality of life. However, it is considered a great honor to live there, and many of the city's poorest but longest-living citizens are afforded the honor near the end of their lives. Many seek to live in the Hollows due to their proximity to the Rings and create goods and works of art with the sole intention to sell to pilgrims and those who live in the Rings.
The Grest Hollow Market at the center of the structure is nearly 20 million square feet of goods stalls, a place many can find virtually any good they are seeking at a reasonable price, if you are willing to haggle. A common saying in the city is "If you want the best, head to the upper rings; if you want the rest, head to the Grest."
The districts below the megastructure are often called the Lower Rings, named for baser minerals that are pulled from a bag by an Augur. New districts are regularly being constructed to accommodate the constant influx of migrants and natural population growth. These districts are by far the largest in geographical size and population density. The Limestone Ring is the largest district, encompassing the circumference of the city's shadow at high noon, and is considered the most prestigious of the Lower Rings. The Lower Rings are the most culturally and socioeconomically diverse districts of the city, attracting people from all walks of life. Major institutions of the city are found here, including the Division of Public Works, the Kingdom's Central Teleportation Office, Kingdom Armed Forces Citadels, and the Monarch's Musical Academy of Vizenia.

History

The History of Throne is longer than most known institutions. It is a mixture of myth, oral tradition, ancient text, rumor, and long-held religious belief. Historians do not agree on much from pre-Starfall accounts, and all should be taken with a grain of salt.

Founding

Throne has been settled since before the era of the First Free City, and likely before The Wizening War. The earliest origins of the city are shrouded in mystery, contradiction, and hearsay, but one consistent persists: the megastructure was found by its first settlers, not built. The original builders are believed to have been the same mysterious people who built the Great Fortresses upon which most major Kingdom cities find themselves situated within.
Legends state that thirteen tribes of wanderers from the north found the great structure. After having settled first in Broken Bow in the far north of Sinderlan, the tribes wandered until eventually finding the structure, which their Augurs were said to have broken down and proclaimed ultimate salvation. The tribes then ventured into the structure and began building permanent settlements. The tribes and their Augurs then crowned their first unified monarch, the King of Origin. The King was said to have been the navigator of the traveling tribes which made a pivotal decision amidst a storm to continue traveling south despite the harsh storms of the coast. Whether the King of Origin originally existed is debated to this day, but his myth inspires many to trust in their instincts and the wills of fate.

Points of interest

Throne has virtually countless places of interest. Many cultural, religious, historical, and entertainment-related attractions garner millions of visitors annually.
The Twentieth Starry Palace: The home of the Monarch of Finality, the Starry Palace sits upon the center spire of the Upper Onyx Ring. It is said to be constructed from a single gargantuan piece of onyx, magically transported to the apex of the superstructure. It is studded with enormous gemstones of various colors, creating the illusion of a starry sky as the surface catches light. It is the twentieth building to bear the name, completed in 8700 after nearly two centuries of construction. Its lower levels are open to visitors, of which it attracts nearly 10 million per year, making it the most-visited building in Perradin. Agents of The Monarch's Bulwark guide visitors through the tours and regale histories of the city.
Grest Hollow Market: The largest market in the world by square footage, the Grest Hollow Market houses 20 million square feet of vendors, shops, and places of commerce. The shopowners have a reputation for being the harshest hagglers in Sinderlan, leading many to seek a challenge to acquire rare or high quality goods. The market has a dual reputation for being a place to score a deal or to get scammed endlessly. It attracts millions of visitors per year to see the spectacle alone.
House of the Fifth Eon: Located in the Upper Amber Ring, this is a major religious site for adherents of the Augury. It was originally constructed to honor the 5000th anniversary of the foundation of The Final Kingdom and a spillover Augur House to take away strain from the Great Augur House. It became the site of tragedy when The Monarch's Bulwark clashed with the forces of Garrett's Heresy rebellion led by Garrett of the Crown, son of the late King of Bastions. The House became a symbol of the Kingdom's strength in a time of crisis, redoubling the faith of many. It has since been a major Augur house and is currently headed by Helos of Broken Bow.
The Great Augur House of Throne: One of the three Great Augur Houses in Sinderlan, it is home to the regional archives of the order and the sites of training for future Augurs. The Monks of Finality tend to most administrative functions and see to petitioners. The House attracts many visitors to ask the most powerful Augurs of the Kingdom their future.
Starfall Plaza: Located in the Upper Sapphire Ring, this plaza was constructed following the War of the Starfall to commemorate the peace accords. Originally commissioned by the Queen of the Starfall, it was demolished by The Queen of Reborn Doctrine during the century of destruction and fallout of the Starfall itself and her reign. It was rebuilt by the Queen of the Bloom in a show of solidarity. Since its reconstruction, it has become a place of quiet contemplation amidst the bustle of the upper city. The north end of the plaza is home to the Consulate Embassy as well as an Office of Warforged Affairs. Many come to the plaza as a place of mediation and contemplation.
The Bleeding Troubadour: Found in the Lower Feldspar Ring is perhaps one of the most famous taverns in all of Sinderlan, this business is older than some duchies. Allegedly founded in the 34th century, it claims to have served nearly a hundred monarchs in its time, with signatures adorning the walls, the veracity of which are questionable. Famous adventuring parties such as the Burnt Hammock-riders and the Biscuit Brigade have made the Troubadour a regular spot on their travels. Many adventurers make pilgrimages to the tavern as a good-fortune ritual, if only to just see the effigy hanging outside.
Monarch's Musical Academy of Vizenia: Found in the Lower Bluestone Ring, it is known as one of the premier bardic schools in the region, having established a significant reputation since its founding in 8566. With an official charter from both the Vizenian House of Doges and the Monarch's House of Lords, it is well-funded with multiple endowments annually. It has produced multiple prolific bards and composers since its inception including Hapu Korlan, Benjamin Cardinalheim, Keezel, and Lapirnicus the Brave. Its current president is Grelka Kiidian.
Keezel Historic Birthplace: The home of the famous bard, Keezel, located in the Virstrin Hollow. It is a humble stonecut home in the northern inner wall of the megastructure. It is a museum to all of the greatest bardic accomplishments of the gnomish superstar. Run by her extended family, it s a major destination for fans, admirers, and emulators amongst the bardic profession and general public.
