Merchant Road

The merchant roads that crisscross the more civilized area of Pandoria are believed to be sacred grounds for the deity Habil al Barüt. It is considered a horrible idea to damage, or worse, destroy these roads between cities. If you are discovered destroying these roads, there will be no one who will do business with you, except all but the most removed people from society. To some, it is considered a chance for a good blessing to either repair a merchant road or, even better, to make a new merchant road. This, however, does not preclude armies from using these roads for their gain; it is considered sacrilegious for the nations to use them for war, and it is not unheard of when a large band of Followers of Habil stand in the roadway, blocking the advance of an oncoming army. Attacking or even killing a priest of Habil is believed to be the worst act one can commit against the faith, and if this crime is proven to have been done, that person or group will never be able to purchase anything from any follower of Habil.

One will always find a traveling merchant of some kind on these roads, traveling from one end with some regularity, barring weather, war, or some form of divine intervention.

If one encounters one of the bands of traveling merchants, it will be evident that they are fervent followers of Habil al Barüt. Some call these traveling merchants and gypsies, some call them charlatans, and some call them outright thieves. Regardless, they provide a steady stream of commerce and trade along the merchant roads. Not by command or decree but purely by choice, certain races have taken up various mantles in support of these traveling markets.

  • Half-Orc and Dwarves that follow him have taken up being warrior priests and are guardians of the merchants, their wares, and their profits.
  •
  • Humans, Gnomes, and Elves find themselves being Pathfinders and forging ahead to make new merchant roads and being the spokespersons for opening trade relations with a new town or city.
