History
The Shadar-kai's history is intrinsically tied to the Raven Queen and the realm of Lómëndor (the Shadowfell). Their origins can be traced back to the tumultuous period of the First Elven War.
During this conflict between the Sun Elves and Moon Elves, a group of elves, disillusioned by the violence and seeking to avoid taking sides, chose a different path. Led by a charismatic and mysterious figure, they retreated from the material plane to Lómëndor, a realm
of shadow and melancholy.
In this twilight realm, these elves encountered an enigmatic entity known as the Raven Queen. Once a powerful elven mage, the Raven Queen had ascended to godhood through complex and controversial means. Seeing potential in these elven refugees, the Raven Queen offered them power and purpose in exchange for their devotion.
The elves accepted, and thus began their transformation into the Shadar-kai. Over generations, exposure to the Shadowfell's energies and the Raven Queen's influence dramatically altered their physical form and spiritual essence. Their skin became pale and cold to the touch, their eyes dark and haunting. They developed an affinity for shadow magic and an innate understanding of the boundary between life and death.
The Shadar-kai's society evolved to reflect their new existence. They became known for their stoicism, their ability to endure hardship, and their complex philosophies regarding life, death, and fate. Their culture places great emphasis on experiencing intense sensations and emotions, a response to the numbing effects of prolonged exposure to the Shadowfell.
As servants of the Raven Queen, the Shadar-kai took on roles as guardians of the passage between life and death. They work to maintain the balance between these states, often intervening when the natural order of life and death is disrupted. This has sometimes brought them into conflict with necromancers, undead, and those seeking immortality.
Over time, some Shadar-kai have returned to the material plane, either as emissaries of the Raven Queen or seekers of their own destiny. These individuals often find themselves caught between two worlds, their shadowy nature both fascinating and unsettling to other races. They were brought back to Isanel, ancient city of Shadar-Kai where they decided to create their first city on Material Plane once again under the rule of Elella and Delru Kandus.
The Shadar-kai maintain a complex relationship with other elven subraces. While they share a common ancestral origin, their drastically different evolution and allegiance to the Raven Queen sets them apart. Many elves view the Shadar-kai with a mixture of pity and unease, seeing them as cautionary tales of the dangers of divine pacts and planar travel.
