Summary
An old dwarven tale of a wingless dragon that swam through the ground like water, and took up 50 feet of the world, and stood 40 feet tall. He attempted to steal the heart of The Matriarch, the sleeping Dragon Goddess, but was halted by a Kobold who held the power of Cosmos. He slew the beast, himself dying after his victory.
Historical Basis
It is uncertain when this story takes place, but Dwarven scholars have traced it back to the Prima Centura, the First Century. It is likely that Cranch is based upon a dragon outcast, it's wings torn from its body to show it's failure. As such it had to resort to moving the earth before it, like paddling through water, most likely in effort to find the Mythical Heart of The Matriarch to regain it's lost honor. The Kobold was a real historical figure, who claimed to be the Chosen of Cosmo. It was deemed no coincidence that both draconic creatures died on the same day.
