Black Fang Hollow
Black Fang Hollow is a marshland settlement located on an island just off the Oak Trade Road in central Redstone Hold. Originally constructed as a Clan Redstone marsh outpost, the settlement was intended to serve as a waystation and administrative foothold in the wetlands. It was only partially completed before being abandoned due to severe environmental hardship and lack of resources.
The site later became the first political centre of Clan Bogclutch before Ryth Redstone assassination.
History
Clan Redstone Era
Black Fang Hollow began as a Redstone project to extend influence into the marsh routes near the Oak Trade Road. Early construction focused on:
-A raised embankment
-Timber housing foundations
-Basic palisade preparations
-The marsh environment proved hostile. Disease, soil instability, and repeated creature attacks led Clan Redstone to withdraw. The settlement remained incomplete and unfortified when it was abandoned.
Bogclutch Occupation
Goblin groups settled on the island and transformed it into a semi-feudal encampment, using its isolation as natural defence. The Hollow functioned as a seat of early Bogclutch organisation, with community huts, food plots, and militia tents forming the core of the settlement.
However, increasing marsh mire beast attacks, food scarcity, and overextension forced its eventual abandonment. The inhabitants became refugees, later contributing to the founding population of Mire Point.
Master’s Lord Protectorship
With the arrival of The Master and The Cat (Aliza Everguard), the region was stabilised and restructured. Under their authority:
-The bridges to the mainland were destroyed
-Remains of the mainland settlement were completely abandoned
-The mainland along the road became overrun with mire creatures, prompting further defensive work
-A palisade line was constructed on the mainland directly beside the Oak Trade Road to protect passing caravans
-Militia garrisons were stationed permanently in the area
-This transformed the region from a collapsing refugee zone into a functional semi-military outpost.
Modern Era 87 Era of Enchantment.
Today, Black Fang Hollow serves as a small agricultural homestead and defensive post under Clan Bogclutch. Though no longer a capital, it plays a practical role in regional security and marshland farming.
Current features include:
-Large cattail farms inside reinforced walls
-A small clothing and tailoring workshop specialising in cattail fibres
-Modest housing for workers and militia
-Patrol rotations guarding the nearby road and watching for mire beast movement
-Most former inhabitants have long since migrated to Mire Point, the current capital, but Black Fang Hollow remains symbolically important as the earliest seat of Bogclutch identity.
Climate
Black Fang Hollow lies deep within the central marshlands of Redstone Hold, an environment defined by humid air, shifting water levels, and thick seasonal fogs. The climate is dominated by long, cool wet seasons followed by short, warm spells that cause the marsh channels to swell and recede unpredictably. Mornings often arrive wrapped in heavy mist that clings to the Oak Trade Road, reducing visibility for travellers and patrols alike.
The ground remains saturated throughout most of the year, making construction difficult and limiting heavy agriculture. Storms rolling in from the western flats can turn the entire basin into a patchwork of flooded pools, while summer heat raises dense clouds of insects. Despite these challenges, the constant moisture and nutrient rich sediment support fast growing marsh plants, particularly cattails, which thrive even in unstable wet soil.
Winters are mild but damp, with biting winds whipping through the reeds and causing water to freeze in thin sheets across the shaded pools. The marsh climate is harsh for settlers but ideal for the creatures known as mire beasts, whose activity historically made this region one of the most dangerous stretches along the Oak Trade Road.
