The Marad Tapesties
The Marad Tapestries are a set of large-scale tapestries created to commemorate the centenery of the federation of the independent Marad clans into one state.
Created in 5.810, the tapestries show the clans' totem plants linked in a circle. Around the borders of the tapestry are symbolic representations of the rights and agreements of the federation:
- Freedom of trade
- Freedom of movment
- Universal education
- Universal justice
- Equality of faith
- Equality of voice (democracy)
- Mutual aid
Purpose
The tapestry was designed in order to communicate the creation of federation to all members of the Marad clans, including those unable to read.
It was decided that a tapestry would represent both the major industries of the clans and to symbolise the interwoved and indivisible nature of the federation.
Document Structure
Publication Status
The tapestry was designed to be easy to translate for creation on a punch-card loom, for mass production and distribution to each of the clan-chiefs. The head of each clan was gifted a copy of the tapestry and they still hang in the High Halls of the signatories.
The punch-cards that created the tapestry are kept in the National Museum in Aroubal, alsongside a replica of the tapestry itself. Additional replicas have been produced, replacing tapestries lost in fires or otherwise irrepairably damaged, and an additional tapestry was created and held in trust for the displaced Thiwya, as a promise to continue to push for the return of their ancestral land.
Historical Details
History
The twenty-five clans of Marad maintained fiercely independent territories through the sixth and seventh centuries, often trading and infrequently falling into small-scale warfare with their neighbours. Following the Lonvikland crusade, the southernmost clans - Cauddia, Ddyfne, Rewfr, and Tryw - began to fear for their survival. The chiefs of these clans rejected the Hrimar traditons of alliance through marriage and considered alternatives, ultimately devising a federation of clans that, while operating independently, would agree to a set of foundational principles and mutual defence of the others against aggression.
