Mor

Mor is an island on Novus off the northern coast of Zurea. Few species call the island home, and it is strictly off limits to travellers due to the predatory Morgolks which emerge after dark.

Geography

The island itself is essentially a massive crater in a plateau, with a small inland lake in its center.

Localized Phenomena

Because of the crater depth in contrast to its width, the mountainous sides cast a dark shadow that blankets the landscape, save for a few hours around midday.

Climate

Mor is generally very dry, and colder on average than its latitute would suggest.

Fauna & Flora

Vegetation is relatively scarce as plants on Mor only recieve limited sunlight and rain due to its geography. Small shrubs coat most of the island, though the region around its central lake supports hardier tree species. Small rodent-like creatures are the most plentiful, though a larger herbivorous species called Elokin gather around the central lake where food is most abundant. Elokin are intelligent and social primate-like psuedo-mammals, forming large groups. These creatures will follow the sun where its light penetrates the crater during the day, and are completely docile towards outsiders such as humans. When the inescapable darkness falls, Elokin gather tightly, seemingly afraid of the night. The Elokin's fear comes in the form of Morgolks, a cousin species which diverged in the last 800 thousand years. Larger, stronger, and also relatively intelligent, Morgolks have adapted to prey upon their former kin. Using the frequent darkness to their advantage, Morgolks ascend from caves around the island, and make towards the central lake where Elokin gather. Picking off stranglers or weaklings, Morgolks subdue their prey and drag them back to the caves for consumption. Travel to Mor is forbidden, as humans caught in the darkness may also be subject to predation.

History

Mor was discovered in the 10th century NE, though ill-fated expeditions have led to the island's quarantine.
