Vaelros' Gifts
At the beginning of time, Weftyr spun threads from the raw essence of existence and wove reality on the Loom of Eternity. The Arcane Threads hummed with unbound potential and the Divine Pattern spread out across the land. The Prime Deities, in their divine wisdom, wove their gifts into the divine pattern and the world flourished. But even in the Divine Era, perfection is a fleeting. The Prime Deities began to quarrel over their visions of creation. Their discord snagged upon the divine tapestry. Threads tangled, and Weftyr's design faltered.
Weftyr wept, and the Divine Pattern changed. New Planes were woven, and the Prime Deities were each bound within their own domains. With the Prime Deities locked within their own Planes, the divine pattern was restored. Weftyr returned to her eternal weaving, passing each god the threads required for their sacred labours. And from their divine workings, potential flowed into the world.
But, the world was not the same. And thus ended the the Divine Era. No longer did power flow freely through the Arcane Threads. Now they received only what remained after the gods add their vision to the tapestry of existence.
Vaelros, the Spinner of Threads, saw the Arcane Threads upon the earth begin to fray. The Divine Pattern sat strong, but no longer did potential flow across the earth. The Arcane Threads fell out of the reach of mortal hands. Vaelros remembered the age when mortals could reach toward the impossible and sometimes bend it to their will. And pity stirred within him. Pity for those he taught, who he encouraged to reach ever higher.
And so Vaelros bent his portion of Weftyr’s gift not toward his own glory, but toward the Arcane Threads that touch the mortal realm. With his gifts, once again mortals might yet shape their own fates. And so, it is the duty of mortals to learn and to write their own dreams into the fabric of reality.
Historical Basis
This is the tale as it is told by the devote followers of Vaelros. The truth of what happened has been long lost in the fall of the Divine Era. It is impossible to know if the Arcane Threads really have faded from what they once were, or if the arcane knowledge of old was lost through mortal failings.
What is known, is that Spell Weavers cannot match the great feats of their predecessors. Magic from ancient items has faded, or been lost entirely.
