Arcane Script

The Arcane Text is considered the language of Magic. It is a carefully guarded fragment of ancient civilizations that have long since been destroyed. All Spell Weavers use the Arcane Text to transcribe their spells.

For an Arcane Caster, the format is quite rigid. Any two mages will write a spell the same way, with very little variation. These Casters use a spell diagram as a step by step guide, indicating which threads should be affected, in which order and in what way.

There is greater variation between Divine Casters, based on how they come to the spell. Divine Casters consider a spell diagram as inspiration and guidance. They can use this as a basis for their own process of meditation and experimentation.

Writing System

When writing spells, Arcane Script is closest to a Syllabary language. Different aspects of each spell will be represented by a specific symbol.

Syntax

Spells will be written either one per page, or with a heavy dividing line across the page or around the spell.

Across the top, the Schools of Magic are listed. This allows the caster to prepare, ensuring that the proper Arcane Threads are available. If specific threads are particularly important they are often drawn slightly larger.

The next section indicates any specific elements that will be needed. Not every spell includes an element, but most do in some way. This is again to ensure that the needed Threads are available.

After that is the main section of the spell. This section reflects the process to actually cast the spell. It isn't possible to directly translate these symbols, however most instruction group similar symbols under a specific term in discussion. You can see additional information about this process in the Spell Weavers guide.

History
There are a variety of scholars who study the Arcane Script itself.
The symbols remain essentially unchanged since the Divine Era. The symbols were old even in that time. However, they were used in colloquial discussions of magic. The symbols represented words within the spoken language then.
Since then, as magic has gotten rarer, it has become rarer to discuss magic in day to day discussion, and so these words have faded from modern language. As the language has evolved, the symbols have become relegated to use only by the Spell Weavers and with no spoken equivalencies.
