This is the continuation of Session 449 – A God’s Weapon.
A month ago, at the same time the Barony of Sarkum experienced a massive earthquake and flooding in some of its coastal villages, a star fell from the sky. With a blazing tail, a shooting star was visible over Ternu Heath in southern Kanday, exploding in the sky with a loud thunderclap that was heard throughout the kingdom.
Master weaponsmith Cearbhall Ciernack is an expert on fallen stars or meteorites, having collected the metal from many after a long expedition to Anfla Island. From these, he forges impressive weapons and armor. Cearbhall is eager to see what he can find from the recent meteor shower and asks his friend Odin to join him. Odin, eager to improve his armaments with some of Cearbhall’s fine work, eagerly joins the expedition.
Location: City of Aleath in the Kingdom of Kanday.
Part 1 – Friends are Missing
Some days later, Edelina is worried. Odin has not returned from his excursion to the Ternu Heath with Cearbhall. The weaponsmith’s apprentice, Awyn, has reported that the pair is over a week late. Worse, a trio of disreputable foreigners was asking about Cearbhall, and upon learning of his plans, followed him and Odin into the wilderness. The trio rushes west to find their friends.
Location: Ternu Heath in the Kingdom of Kanday.
Part 2 – Rust Monsters
After several days of searching, the party spots a small wooded area where a group of trees has recently been knocked down. As they approach, they notice among the timber a small, water-filled crater with four strange creatures trying to “eat” the meteor fragments. These stocky, armored quadrupeds resemble armadillos with a metallic outer shell and a sturdy, long tail that drips with metal-dissolving acid. The Welfynn, more commonly known as Rust Monsters, spot Edelina and rush forward. The well-hidden Remy and Abadon intercept them and prove to be more tempting targets. Remy's elemental aura of flowing metal excites them, and Abadon's large three-pronged spear with a metal head is also an especially appealing snack.
The Welfynn are tough, Ivashu, having digested and converted any metal they devour into their hard outer shell. They do minor damage to Abaddon’s spear, but fortunately, nothing a skilled weaponsmith can't repair. Remy pulls chunks of metal from their shells, making them vulnerable, and Abaddon Touch of Death works particularly well. The metal-eating Ivashu are destroyed, and the heroes claim the meteor fragments they had been feasting on.
Part 3 – Dead Cyclops
The next day, the heroes come across a gruesome scene: on the bloody, muddy ground are three carcasses of the Oculus, also known as the Harnic Cyclops. These peaceful one-eyed quadrupeds have mangled bodies and were recently slaughtered. Edelina is especially offended by the senseless death of these normally placid Ivashu. Who killed them?
A thorough search of the area reveals the footprints of three men and a mule. Likely the men who were following Odin and Cearbhall. The Oculus bodies are peppered with deep slashing wounds and burn marks. Sections of the nearby vegetation show areas of scorching and metallic shards similar to what Remy conjures. The tracks are fresh, and the heroes follow them.
