Fallacia

A magic that twists reality and makes you question your existence

Fallacia is an innate ability exclusive to Ananans, allowing them to manipulate perception and cognition through an Aura that induces illusions. It affects all senses, creating immersive experiences that can be comforting, distressing, or entirely transformative, with direct contact enhancing its strength. While revered within Ananan culture and governed by strict ethical discussions, it is feared and outlawed by Magi and Humans, who view all Ananan magic as dangerous and unnatural.

Properties

Source & Nature
  • Fallacia is an innate ability, exclusive to Ananans, allowing them to manipulate perception and cognition.
  • It does not generate physical alterations but alters how individuals perceive reality.
  • Ananans using Fallacia generate an Aura around themselves that induces illusions in those within its range.
  • Direct contact by touching the target’s head strengthens the effect, allowing deeper mental influence.
  • Illusions are often immersive, incorporating sights, sounds, tastes, and smells to reinforce believability.

Manifestation & Sensory Perception
  • Fallacia influences all senses: sight, sound, smell, taste, touch, and emotion.
  • Illusions can be comforting, distressing, or any emotional state the caster wishes to evoke.

Mechanisms & Functionality
  • Fallacia is activated through meditation, imagination, and mental focus.
  • It requires sustained concentration, with stronger and more complex illusions demanding greater effort.
  • Memory alterations always require direct physical contact to implant, modify, or erase recollections.
  • Once an illusion is imposed, it persists until the Ananan stops maintaining it or the target exits the aura.
  • Ananans can voluntarily take chamomile to weaken their magical abilities, though some are forcibly given it by Magi or humans to suppress their powers.
  • Liquorice amplifies all forms of Ananan magic, making abilities stronger when consumed.

Scope & Limitations
  • Fallacia creates illusions but does not alter physical reality.
  • The range of the aura varies by the Ananan’s power and skill, with stronger users able to affect a wider area.
  • Both Fallacia Ananans and those with the Aptitude can detect Fallacia, even when it is not actively being used, and counteract its effects if necessary.
  • Those who do not possess Fallacia, or the Aptitude, do not realise that they are in an illusion, and therefore cannot resist it.

Interaction with the Environment & Other Magics
  • Fallacia leaves lasting psychological traces, sometimes causing paranoia as victims question what was real.
  • It can affect multiple targets simultaneously to the same degree if they step into the aura, and they will collectively experience the same illusion.
  • Strong emotions or mental discipline do not weaken its effects.

Effects

Fallacia has profound effects on both the caster and the target(s), influencing the mind, emotions, and sensory perception. These effects vary in intensity based on the skill of the Ananan using it and the susceptibility of those affected.

Effects on the Target

  • Perceptual Distortion: Targets experience altered reality, seeing, hearing, smelling, and feeling sensations that do not exist.
  • Emotional Influence: Induces emotions such as fear, calm, joy, paranoia, or sadness with remarkable accuracy.
  • Cognitive Disruption: Causes confusion, forgetfulness, or hyperfocus depending on intent.
  • Physical Reactions: Some illusions trigger involuntary physical responses, such as flinching, dizziness, nausea, or even fainting.
  • Sleep & Mental Fatigue: Prolonged exposure can cause exhaustion, induce deep sleep, or prevent rest entirely.
  • Pain or Relief: Can create the illusion of experiencing pain, or can relieve pain. Though never physically altered, the target will retain full memory of the sensation.
  • Mind Entrapment: In extreme cases, a target fully believes the illusion, losing all awareness of external reality.

Effects on the Caster

  • Concentration Requirement: Maintaining Fallacia requires focus, and prolonged use over several hours leads to mental exhaustion.
  • Innate Resistance: Ananans who possess Fallacia are naturally immune to its effects, therefore, they do not experience illusions or mental instability themselves.
  • Emotional Perception: Fallacia users have a natural heightened awareness of others’ emotions and thoughts.
  • Endurance Through Practice: Like any skill, Fallacia improves with training, allowing practioners to hone their skill through experience.

Long-Term Consequences

  • Targets may suffer lasting confusion, paranoia, or emotional instability if repeatedly subjected to Fallacia.
  • Addiction to Fallacia: Some individuals become dependent on experiencing illusions, seeking out Fallacia users to relive comforting, euphoric, or even painful sensations.
  • Dissociation Disorders: Frequent exposure can cause individuals to detach from reality, struggling to distinguish illusions from truth in their daily lives.
  • Schizophrenia-like Symptoms: Long-term or extreme use can lead to hallucinations, delusions, and an inability to trust one's own perceptions.
  • Irreversible Memory Alteration: Sometimes, deep memory modifications or prolonged emotional suppression can permanently reshape a target’s personality, identity, or mental state.

While Fallacia is a powerful tool, its misuse or overuse carries significant risks for those subjected to its influence. However, Ananans with this ability are naturally immune to its effects and remain emotionally steady, unaffected by the illusions they create.

Cultural & Social Impact

Ananan Ethics & Moral Responsibility
  • Strong Ethical Framework: Ananans place great importance on ethical discussions surrounding all magic, with Fallacia particularly raising concerns about consent, manipulation, and autonomy.
  • Moral Divide on Use: Some Fallacia users see their abilities as a means of comfort and healing, while others acknowledge the risk of dependency and blurred reality.
  • Addiction & Dependency: Ananans recognise that repeated exposure can lead individuals to crave illusions, and most Fallacia users take care to prevent unhealthy reliance.
  • Exploitation Concerns: While most Fallacia users are responsible, some are coerced or misused by outsiders seeking continued access to their abilities.

Outsider Perceptions of Fallacia

  • Fear of Ananan Magic: Humans and Magi do not distinguish between different forms of Ananan magic, but they are aware that some Ananans can distort reality, alter thoughts, and manipulate emotions. This fuels fear, reinforcing the belief that all Ananan magic is dangerous and unnatural.
  • Religious Condemnation: Cosmos doctrine treats all Ananan magic as a single forbidden force, portraying its users as either cursed beings who were mistakenly granted power or unworthy thieves who stole divine gifts.
  • Superstitions & Myths: Stories exaggerate the dangers of Ananan magic, portraying users as deceivers who can twist perception, drive people mad, or steal thoughts, further justifying their oppression.
  •

While Fallacia is an integral part of Ananan culture, it is feared and outlawed by Magi and Humans. Ananan ethical concerns focus on ensuring responsible use, preventing dependence, and addressing exploitation, whereas outsiders see it only as a dangerous and forbidden power.

    Governance & Control

    Teaching & Ethical Guidance
    • Community-Based Learning: Ananans are taught how to use their magic by their parents, elders, or within their communities. Ananan magic is inherited, meaning a child will always possess the magic of one of their parents.
    • Education & Support: Schools provide structured guidance, ensuring all Ananans develop their abilities safely and responsibly.
    • Ethical Discussions: Ananan communities strongly discourage unethical use of magic, reinforcing responsibility in its application.
    • Consequences of Neglect: Ananans who are not taught how to control their magic may develop learning difficulties, stunted magical growth, or become unstable in their abilities.

Legal Suppression by Magi & Humans

  • Strict Surveillance: Ananans are constantly monitored for signs of magic use. Accusations, even without evidence, can lead to punishment.
  • Public Punishments: Those caught using magic face flogging, imprisonment, or public humiliation in stocks as a warning to others.
  • Aetheric Shackles: Any Ananan caught using magic may be restrained with shackles that deliver regular Aether pulses, preventing magic use. This is physically and mentally agonising.
  • Tasers & Compliance Measures: Humans use tasers to incapacitate Ananans who resist control or attempt to use magic in defiance of the law. Magi rely on Aether for direct intervention.
  •

Fallacia, like all Ananan magic, exists under constant suppression by Magi rule. While Ananans maintain their traditions through education and ethical governance, they must navigate a world where their abilities are criminalised, requiring secrecy, resistance, and careful control of their powers.

    Says...

"It's an illusion that you can't see. There's no detection, or indication that magic is happening, it's like you turn a corner, and suddenly, you're somewhere else, and it makes complete logical sense, to the point you very quickly start to question reality. That is not to say it's an evil magic, like all Ananan magic, it is very beautiful and kind when used correctly. It can relieve pain, tell immersive stories, and send you off to peaceful restless sleep."

    Says...

"My Grandma on my dad's side is a Fallacia. She could tell such wonderful stories. It was beyond magical. There would be unicorns and dragons and rainbows you could slide down, and you could feel it, and smell it, and even taste it. There could be an agony in its absense though. Because it felt so real, all I wanted to do was hold onto it, and when the story would end, and reality would begin, it could feel so cold and dark."

    Says...

"Oh I find it fascinating. So much magic is clear and obvious, but fallacia has a subtlety and an art to it that makes it ever so slightly unsettling, and that's why I love it. I've experienced many illusions by Fallacia, sometimes just for the fun, and each time I've found myself so convinced by this crafted reality, a journey into the mind of this person, that I can never understand those who abhor the brilliance and creativity of these people. Fallacia is... magical."

    Says...

"I don't know a lot, to be perfectly honest. Is it the one to do with nightmares? Right, well from what I do know, it brings into a question a lot about autonomy. I find it quite terrifying that such people who can enter your mind, without your knowledge, and convince you of another reality exist, especially as there is no way to truly police or govern this. How can you prove it? Goodness! It is a massive and complex issue, of which I am perplexed on where to begin."

    Rance
    Says...

"I watched this film once. A real head-fuck kind of film. It was about this ordinary family living an ordinary life, but then you start to see things that aren't normal, but because no one reacts to them, you shrug and think, I guess in this film, having an elephant walk down the road is normal, and as it goes on and on, it gets stranger, and then you realise that this friend of the family is an ananan, and really its him, messing with their reality, and by the end of the film you don't even know which way is up. Really freaked me out, and so when I met a real ananan who could do that kind of magic, well, I think that film definitely affected my opinion."

    Ari
    Says...

"What is it? I don't get it. Can all Ananans do it? No? So what, like they get in your mind, and stuff, make you see things that ain't true? Great, now I ain't sleeping tonight. Is that really true? Like in this country there's people that can actually do that to you? That's so creepy. They need to lock 'em up. I ain't wanting some weirdo coming in and giving me nightmares in the night."

    Yoa.png

    Says...

"There's very little for me to tell you about it. It's a... talent, I suppose you could say, that some have. I have the ability, but I don't have the talent or the inclination. You need an imagination, and I know I lack one of those, and you need the creativity to see where your magic can be used, and I don't possess that either. It is a fact that I am a Fallacia type, but I don't think I could ever call myself a practicing Fallacia."

    Pearl Lightly
    Says...

"Discovering that Yoa is a Fallacia does put this magic in a new light for me. I've known Yoa for a few years now. She's trustworthy, reliable, and when it comes to preparing the house for any situation, with her, its effortless. Does she use magic to do it? I hope not, oh but that's the terrifying thing. How would we know? I think, in fact, knowing what I do about that magic has made me see Yoa in a different light. Perhaps she is not as trustworthy."

    Prince Veris
    Says...

"I'm learning about it at the moment. Aether is easy to find information on, Ananan magic in general is a lot harder, but Fallacia, this one tiny little strand of magic, and everyone goes quiet. Nothing is written, except to be vigilant, to constantly question your reality, and to be aware of sensations of paranoia or schizophrenia. I'd love to meet one, but I suspect no Ananan would actually tell me whether they were one, or not."
