Magan

The hero of this piece

Magan, originally born Hannan Magan Marisa, is an Ananan who was raised as the son of Aeryn DeSteffen, the Duchess of The Stiriphese. Once a intelligence officer in the military, Magan's life was upended during the Reconstruction when he was enslaved by Stobal Hutz. Now, seven years later, he is an obedient servant trying to survive, along with his family in the modern world.

Background

902: Birth and Early Life

Hannan Magan Marisa was born in 902 and was immediately given up for adoption. There is no record of his true mother or father. He was taken to an orphanage and adopted when he was one by Aeryn DeSteffen who said of the moment she had no intention to adopt, but the nurse handed her this baby, and she immediately fell in love. She raised him as her son, sparing nothing. As a mother, Hanan described her being always very present and supportive. Every play, recital, and exhbition, she was there. When Hannan was 12, Aeryn officially titled him Lord of Osya.

910: Meeting Meridian

See also: Meridian

When Hannan was seven, he met a factory slave called Meridian. The two boys immediately became friends, and so Aeryn purchased Meridian to serve as a companion to her son. It was pressed upon each that their duty was to care for each other.

908–921: Education

Hannan began at the private school in Steffen at the age of five, continuing until he was 18. During his school years, Hannan excelled in languages and history, mastering Anana, Favontille, Malagalese, and Perenx. His studies were greatly helped by living with Aeryn, who had been physically present for most historical moments in Favontille history. Aeryn also personally tutored him in politics, Arcane Rosa, a type of martial art, sword and gunmanship, and the Aptitude, a type of magic that only Ananans can learn. Hannan excelled at all of these subjects.

At school, Hannan dated Mala Vasparada for almost three years. They ended things amicably before they left for university.

921–925: University and Military Training

After completing his a-levels in history, Favontille, Anana, and politics, Hannan studied history at St. Athelros of Esprite from the ages of 19 to 21. This was unusual for an Ananan to attend a university not in The Stiriphese, but his mother's sponsorship permitted him to do so. After graduating, he enlisted in the Favontille army, joining the elite Night Comman unit. He completed officer training and earned the rank of Captain at 22. By the time of the Reconstruction, he was a Major. During his officer training, he met Nina Neseryada and they started dating.

925–935: SDA Career and Queen Adelaide’s Assassination

Though he was associated with Night Command, Hannan had always planned to work in intelligence. He joined the Strategic Defence Agency (SDA) alongside as an intelligence officer, focusing on counter-terrorism operations, including interrogations, investigations and data analysing. As part of his role, he would regularly have to work alongside Meridian who had been a member of the army since he was 16, and part of Night Command since he was 19.

In 935 he accompanied Aeryn purely in the role of her son during Queen Adelaide’s visit to Ibaleban. At a ceremony, the Queen was assassinated before him. This event made Hannan severely question his abilities as he had no awareness that there was event a threat. A member of Terva was caught and Enwa claimed they supported the assassination, plunging Favont instantly into what would become the third Favo-Enwa War.

  Why was Queen Adelaide assassinated?

Lord Pyrus was frustrated that Aeryn considered the Ananans as equals. Her love for them was diminishing her capacity as a queen of the Nightwalkers and while he had repeatedly asked her to treat them like the lower class citizens they are, she had ignored him. He decided to take drastic action and showcase the Ananans as assassins. He was already funding their terrorist movement. This would make them hated, and hopefully would kill Hannan Marisa in the process.

935–940: The Third Favo-Enwa War

Following the assassination, Hannan served as a covert operative during the Favo-Enwa War, spending nearly five years in continuous deployment. His skill in languages and his Ananan heritage gained him entry into the Terva unit based in Enwa. Here, he continuously sabotaged events, destroyed information, and relayed details back to Favont. After being caught only two years into the campaign, he escaped, faked his own death, and headed a small agency that supported other operatives and deffectives. Meridian joined him during this period, and while they did not directly end the war, their efforts did severely weaken Enwa's war efforts.

940-941: Post-War and Reconstruction

When Hannan returned he was honourably discharged from the army with the rank of Major. The war had taken a toll on him and he now wished to focus on building a life in The Stiriphese. He became engaged to Nina and started to work for the Duchy of the Stiriphese as a deputy to Aeryn DeSteffen. His calm nature, generosity, and cool logical thinking made him very popular. Merdian also left Night Command and joined the Duchy guard, becoming Hannan's bodyguard. The war had showcased a need for better internal relations, and it was to this end that Arlene Dawes and Aeryn DeSteffen entered into discussions to work more cooperatively.

On the day of The Reconstruction, Arlene Dawes met Hannan Marisa at a coffee shop, implying to him that Aeryn wanted to end her association with him. An explosion happened in the town, following which, Arlene attempted to kill Hannan, but instead he injured her and escaped. He found Nina, but as they were trying to escape the town, they were stopped by Stobal who tasered Hannan and kidnapped them both.

  Why did Stobal kidnap them?

At the begining of 941, Stobal Hutz, a film producer released a film about the life of Aeryn DeSteffen. She called it falsified rubbish, dramatised to suit a dimwitted audience, and sued Stobal for libel, winning the case. This resulted in Stobal no longer having work. As he was considering his revenge, he was approached by another member of the film industry, and a Nightwalker, Errol Flinter, who suggested that the best revenge would be to kidnap the son of Aeryn DeSteffen. This nightwalker had this suggested to him by Lord Pyrus, who sees Hannan as a distraction to Aeryn.

Post-Reconstruction

941-948: Enslavement

Stobal took them from Ibaleban to his new home in Paget, where he stripped Hannan naked and confined him to a small cell in the basement with no water or food. He kept Hannan in this condition for almost two weeks, instructing him on his expectations in his new role as just 'Magan' or Gan for short, his slave.

Hannan struggled against this change, but Stobal kept him in a weakened state and over the period of a few months, converted him into an initially reluctant, but otherwise dutiful slave.

  Stobal’s Conversion Methods
  • Forced Contradictions: Magan was repeatedly placed in situations where fulfilling one order meant disobeying another. This created a constant state of confusion and anxiety, making him dependent on Stobal for guidance and approval. He would also make requests, and then when those requests were fulfilled, tell Magan that he had performed incorrectly.
  • Erosion of Memory: Stobal manipulated Magan’s understanding of his past, distorting memories to isolate him further. He claimed that Aeryn never adopted him as her son, but as her pet, and that she was a plaything. He claimed that Aeryn decided that being affiliated with an Ananan was a poor look, and so she attempted to kill him, but Stobal had saved him. Without Stobal, Magan could have ended up working for someone who did not understand his needs as an ananan, or he could have been killed. Stobal also convinced Magan that his education wasn't real, and his upbrining in Steffen palace was just a fantasy. Magan was an orphan, a pet play thing of a Nightwalker, and someone who clearly enjoyed creating his own fantasies.
  • Imposed Shame: Stobal weaponised guilt, convincing Magan that his survival came at a great cost to others. That Stobal had saved him when he should have focused more on helping Aidan, and that by being ungrateful for his life made a ridicule of everything Nina had sacrificed herself. Meridian's death was also weaponised. His failures in his work, causing the death of Adelaide, resulting in the war, was just one of many examples of why he was not fit for such a role. He was only fit for slavery.
  • Psychological Conditioning: Magan was taught to always refer to his owner as master and mistress, their son, Aidan, as sir, to always stand and bow when they entered a room, to show respect to anyone who was not a slave. He was taught to stand in certain positions for long periods of time as a mark of respect, with any deviance resulting in physical punishment. He was also threatened with causing injury to his wife and children if he failed to meet expectation. Their safety was often used a tool to control him..
  • Scarcity and Deprivation: Basic needs like food, water, and rest were tightly controlled. Compliance was rewarded with minor comforts, while disobedience led to immediate deprivation or harsh punishments. Stobal also used this method to seem kindly, by taking the time to give Magan some food, clothes, or let him sleep, even if it was just crumbs, rags, and the floor. Magan came very quickly grateful for even the most minor of supplies.
  • Loss of Autonomy: Magan was taught that his body did not belong to him, that it existed to serve by reminding him that he had given his body to the Favontille army, and by using him for physical, and sometimes by Laniesti, sexual tasks. He would be required to present himself for punishment, or permanently marked. Stobal claimed ownership of Magan's magical abilities, allowing him to do magic sometimes, and denying him at others.
  • Tattooing: As per the national standard, Stobal marked Magan and Nina with tattoos to indicate they are his property. Whenever Magan performed a role well, he would gift Magan a new tattoo, allowing Magan to choose the image and placement if his efforts had been exceptional. As Lord Commander of Osya, he had no tattoos, but as Magan, his physical appearance and demeanor were made very different.

Life Under Stobal

Magan worked in roles akin to a butler, chauffeur, and valet for the Hutz family. Both Laniesti and Stobal often relied on him to advise and assist, also taking comfort in his calm mannerisms. Though difficult at first, service became very important to Magan. Stobal and Laniesti could be cruel, but they could also be very affectionate in Magan's new skewed opinion, and it became increasingly important to Magan to achieve this level of approval.

Though Ananans tend to have children when they are significantly older (usually around 70 to 100) Stobal instructed Magan and Nina to have children earlier. They had a girl, Magita and a boy, Lucian. Afterwards, Laniesti had Magan sterilised. Magan and Nina found balancing parenting and slavery very hard. Magan is a very dedicated parent, always putting the needs of his children and his wife high above his own.

Personality

Original Personality (Lord Osya)

As Lord Osya, Hannan Magan Marisa exhibited the traits of an INTJ-A ("The Architect"). He was confident, strategic, and independent, with a sharp analytical mind and a focus on long-term goals. His assertive nature made him decisive and self-assured in his leadership roles.

  • Strengths: Logical, goal-oriented, visionary, resourceful, and determined.
  • Weaknesses: Emotionally distant, overly critical, and occasionally dismissive of others' perspectives.

Transformed Personality (Magan)

Under Stobal Hutz’s influence, Magan’s personality underwent a complete reconstruction. The confident, strategic Lord Osya was replaced by a submissive and anxious individual shaped by fear, guilt, and manipulation.

  • Anxious and Obedient: Magan prioritises pleasing authority figures and avoiding conflict, driven by fear of punishment.
  • Dependency: Years of psychological conditioning have made Magan reliant on external validation, particularly from Stobal.
  • Suppressed Intelligence: While Magan retains his strategic mind, he rarely exercises it unless explicitly instructed, fearing repercussions for independent action. In situations where he might have asserted himself or expressed an opinion, he now prefers to remain silent.
  • Conditioned Shame: Magan has been trained to associate any resemblance to his former self with guilt and failure. Traits such as confidence, independence, or strategic thinking were punished or reprimanded, ensuring he suppresses them completely.

Emotional State

Magan does not resist or rebel against his conditioning. He feels deep shame whenever he recognises traits from his past self, which he has been taught to view as dangerous and wrong. This shame reinforces his submissive behaviour and prevents him from reconnecting with the person he once was.

Appearance

  • Height: 5ft 11in
  • Complexion: Pale skin
  • Hair: Slightly wavy black hair
  • Eyes: Bright blue
  • Tattoos: Tattoos cover Magan’s arms, chest, neck, and legs. These were imposed by Stobal and Laniesti to strip him of bodily autonomy. They convinced Magan these alterations were acts of generosity, further reinforcing his lack of control over his own body.
  • Clothing: Like all slaves, Magan wears plain, practical brown or grey clothing designed for functionality.

Demeanour
  • Posture: Magan walks with in a cautious, quiet, and respectful manner, keeping his body rigid and upright, but his head down in submission. His movements are precise and deliberate, almost cat-like, shaped by years of conditioning to minimise mistakes.
  • Speech: He speaks softly and deferentially, in a calm and even tone. He rarely replies immediately, prefering to weigh and consider his words first. He understand that he should never initiate a conversation and rarely speaks unless directly addressed, a habit ingrained by his training. This behaviour extends to his equals, often giving the impression that he is distant and difficult to befriend.
  • Mannerisms: Eye contact is minimal, particularly with authority figures. Magan often keeps his gaze downcast, a subconscious display of submission. His hands remain still or clasped, avoiding gestures that might be misinterpreted. Years of training have made him atune to the needs of others and he will keenly move to fufil the need of his better, afeared he would be punished if he does not.

Skills and Abilities

  • Ignatan Elemental Magic: Magan was born as an Ignatan, an Ananan with the elemental abilities of fire and ice. Growing up, he further developed this skill and his control.
  • The Aptitude: As a child, Magan mastered "The Aptitude," a skill unique to Ananans. This ability allows him to suppress the magic of others, including magi. Mastering The Aptitude demanded dedicated mental training and gives Magan a distinct advantage in conflicts involving magic.
  • Military Training: Magan’s officer training in the Favontille army provided expertise in strategy, combat, and leadership. These skills were sharpened during his years of covert operations in the Favo-Enwa War.
  • Languages: Fluent in Anana, Favontille, Malagalese, and Perenx, Magan’s linguistic skills reflect his extensive education and cultural exposure.
  • Adaptability: Years of enslavement and captivity taught Magan how to adapt to changing circumstances and navigate complex social hierarchies. This adaptability is key to his survival.

History

Aeryn DeSteffen adopted Hannan Magan Marisa in 914 when he was one year old, raising him as her son. She granted him the title of Lord of Osya at 12 and provided him with a privileged upbringing, personally tutoring him in politics, Arcane Rosa, sword and gunmanship, and the Apitude. Their bond was close, but after the Reconstruction, Magan was manipulated by Stobal into believing Aeryn wanted him dead and that reaching out to her for help would destroy his life.

Before finding her son again in 949, Aeryn believed that he had died and tormented herself with guilt at her failings as a parent.

History

Stobal kidnapped Hannan Magan Marisa during the Reconstruction in 941, stripping him of his identity, possessions, and status. Over time, Stobal broke Magan’s will through calculated abuse, psychological conditioning, and manipulation, reducing him to an obedient and dependent slave. Stobal convinced Magan that his past was a lie and that Stobal alone had saved him from a worse fate, cementing his control through a mix of cruelty and calculated "kindness."

History

Laniesti became involved in Magan’s life after his enslavement by Stobal Hutz. As Stobal’s wife, she played an active role in Magan’s subjugation, exploiting him both physically and emotionally. Laniesti used Magan for labour and personal gratification, reinforcing his lack of autonomy and sense of worthlessness. Her actions, while often framed as affectionate or playful, were another layer of control that kept Magan submissive and compliant.
