Revenants

Type: Nihil   A revenant is a corpse reanimated into unlife with the power of Nihil. With varying levels of sentience, they have little community of their own.
  • Abilities: Reanimated by unnatural forces, revenants are quite difficult to kill again. Their formerly vital organs aren’t so vital anymore, so they’re able to withstand tremendous amounts of damage while still staying functional. Besides this, many become able to feed on the flesh of the living in order to regenerate from injuries and empower themselves. Some develop inhuman strength. They might also develop supernatural powers to invoke terror, raise other corpses as thralls, and even alter their shape. More powerful revenants transcend the physical, and can reform their bodies if they are destroyed — though they can’t restore themselves to true life.
  • Origin: A revenant is created when a corpse is infused with Nihil energy. Or, occasionally, when a living creature is killed by Nihil. Reanimation is often done deliberately by a necromancer, but sometimes corpses will reanimate on their own. This can happen in places where death energy is uncommonly strong. Also, much like phantoms, revenants can reanimate on their own if they have unfinished business.
  • Varieties: The two main types of revenants are zombies, who still have most of their flesh left, and skeletons, who don’t. However, revenants have been known to take on much more exotic forms, sometimes combining together out of multiple corpses, or developing ghastly necrotic mutations. Revenants also come in a wide range of sentience, from barely-shambling husks to highly intelligent liches. Depending on the condition of their minds and bodies, some revenants are even able to pass themselves off as living.
  • Personality: Unless their body is specially preserved and prepared at their time of death, most revenants awaken as mindless monstrosities. If they last long enough, many begin gradually recovering their intelligence and personalities. The memories of who they were in life may or may not return, or return only in fragments. Even though they don’t need to eat, revenants are afflicted with an insatiable hunger for living flesh. More intelligent revenants simply ignore this.
  • Visibility: Secret. As walking corpses, revenants are one of the most reviled supernatural creatures. Mortals are known to attack them on sight.
