Psychics
Type: Astral
Psychics are rare individuals innately gifted with mental powers. Their deep connection to the Astral Chaos can be a curse as well as a gift, as they may attract the attention of the dangerous creatures that dwell there. Because of this, psychics are on the forefront of fighting against the machinations of extradimensional aberrations.
- Abilities: Psychic powers are associated with the mind. Depending on how their powers manifest, they often have some combination of telepathy, telekinesis, and extrasensory perception. Other, more exotic powers psychics may be able to develop include biokinesis, mind control, astral projection, empathy, psychic illusions, and even teleportation, among others.
- Origin: Psychics are born with their powers, though they may not fully manifest until later in life. While the trait is sometimes hereditary, it more often emerges at random within the population. No one is entirely certain what causes psychics, but one thing is clear: their powers are Astral in origin. Some theorize psychics are the result of Astral energy randomly influencing fetal development, though others believe there is a more deliberate force at work.
- Varieties: Psychics are usually classified by what types of powers they manifest; telepath, telekinetic, etc. Each psychic will usually have a single ability that they are most capable with, though they typically have some skill in other psychic powers as well. For the most part, psychics aren’t any physically different from the rest of the population, though when they are using their powers they often manifest a visible tell; glowing irises or eyes turning solid black, glowing or darkened veins, an aura of faint light or refraction, or something similar.
- Personality: Most psychics know they’re different from everyone else, even if they don’t understand why. As their powers develop, they begin developing a perception of the world that is very different from that of their peers, and that awareness can make them seem strange. More frighteningly, as they experiment, they eventually become aware of the existence of the horrific entities that dwell in the Astral Chaos, just beyond the veil. After that, the world never looks quite as safe as it did before.
- Visibility: Complicated. The public is aware of psychics, but most believe them to be a type of mutants. The truth is kept secret.
Just to make things clear: psychics aren’t the only metahumans that can have mental powers. Psychics do tend to have the broadest range of these powers, however.
