Vel'Gon

The Shadow Beast of Endless Night

Domains and Aspects

  • Shadow and Death
  • Despair and the Forbidden
  • The Abyss and Hidden Truths
  • The End and the Unknown

  • Vel’gon is the darkness cast by light, the silence beneath hope, the death after life, the truth too dreadful to behold. He rules the Abyss, a bottomless domain of chaos and demons, where the vilest nightmares of the multiverse are said to dwell. Yet to some, Vel’gon is not evil incarnate, but a necessary god, one who contains the unspeakable so others may live in blissful ignorance.

    Symbol and Depiction

Symbol: A mass of pure shadow with two glowing, humanoid eyes staring from within.
Depiction: In most iconography, Vel’gon is a shapeless shadow taking vague humanoid form, with only two piercing eyes visible. During the God Wars, he was depicted as a towering, monstrous figure with writhing shadow-tendrils and four massive clawed arms, a terror whose very form seemed to absorb the light around it.   His eyes are always described as unforgettable, as if they look into your soul and find the parts you hide even from yourself.

    Beliefs and Values

Among followers of Illume, Vel’gon is reviled as the god of despair, ruin, and death, a force that must be erased from the world. But not all see him that way. Some more neutral scholars and mystics believe that Vel’gon is not evil, but essential. He governs the truths that cannot be spoken, the fates that must not be tampered with. Light creates shadow, and Vel’gon is the one who ensures that shadow does not consume the world. To them, he hides what the world is not yet ready to see, and shelters the soul during the final passage.   But due to Illumé’s dominance and Vel’gon’s role in the God Wars, such views are dangerous to express aloud.   “He is the weight beneath the flame. The silence after the hymn. The keeper of the truths you are not ready to carry.”

    Temples and Worship

Vel’gon’s temples were never grand, they were hidden sanctuaries of quiet contemplation and shadowed truth. All official temples are believed to have been destroyed during the rise of Illumé’s power. Yet, whispers remain of shrines that still exist in forgotten crypts, sunken ruins, or deep beneath cities, places untouched by light.

    Legends and Tales

Vel’gon was feared even by other gods. It is believed that had he unleashed the full might of the Abyss during the God Wars, the world would have been consumed entirely. Only in more recent times have scholars begun to understand the scope of that danger, as the demons of the Abyss are locked in an eternal war with the devils of the Nine Hells, a conflict known as the Blood War. The sheer scale of this conflict has caused many to reconsider just how much Vel’gon may have chosen to withhold.

    Mysteries

Why did Vel’gon not unleash the Abyss during the God Wars? Was it because of the Blood War, to prevent the collapse of cosmic order? Or does Vel’gon not truly control the Abyss, but rather fights to contain it?   Others fear something deeper: that Vel’gon may not be fully imprisoned. That perhaps part of him remains behind to keep the Abyss sealed. And if that is true, what happens if even that part of him is lost?
