The world will tremble in fear once the Rustilians figure out that the key to world conquest is just to have more Rustilians. Thankfully, their men are more fond of work and bloodshed than they are of their wives.— Zobeslaus of Malsig
Rustilians are a proud and resilient
human ethnic group native to
Rustillan, a semi-autonomous region under the control of a foreign power, the
Empire of Pallernen. Renowned for their martial prowess and fierce sense of justice and freedom, the Rustilians have for ages been a meddlesome thorn in the Empire's side, but despite their disagreements the two sides continue to cooperate with one another. Those whose moral indignation has brought them into conflict with Imperial rule have departed their ancient homeland or faced prosecution at the hands of the state.
Spirit of Defiance
Although the Rustillans in the Empire of Pallernen enjoy a degree of autonomy when it comes to their taxation policies along with some other privileges, many of them are still discontent with the realm's persecution of religious minorities and a suppression of free speech and magic. Such stark differences led to a mass exodus of Rustilians in 1502 when thousands of dissidents and their families fled the country. Led by
Karl Herwik, a lord from
Hárdilin, the group travelled through the
Republic of Vivernia and launched an ambitious invasion against the
Kingdom of Enor, a realm embroiled in civil war. The decisive victories of
Herwik's Band had secured them a new land to call home and the
Kingdom of Enliten was established.
Renowned Mercenary
Besides establishing establishing new countries, the Rustilian people have also made a name for themselves by working as skilled mercenaries throughout the continent. Their strength in arms and ruthlessness is feared and renowned, especially in the
Mettelagen, where men such as
Roharik the Red inflicted death and terror upon all that came across him and his men. Many of these adventurous mercenaries end up settling down in foreign lands—assuming they survive long enough to retire—creating small communities of Rustilians all across the continent.
