Nation of Free Mages

The Nation of Free Mages is part insurgency, part nation in hiding, operating across Leoram to free sorcerers from the shackles of The Charter Schools of Sorcery. It is an organisation as old as the New Era, beginning with Mages who disagreed with the strict limits placed on them by the Charter. They envisioned a future where Mage and Native could exist on an equal footing rather than having one subordinate to the other. In the face of the overwhelming support for the Charter and its strictures, these Mages stole away from the Council of Tollania and were subsequently declared enemies of civilisation by the newly born Charter Schools of Sorcery.

Structure

Enclaves

The Free Mages have two overarching parts to their organisation: Free Enclaves and Secret Enclaves.   Free Enclaves are settlements located in the wild regions of Leoram, beyond the reach of the other established nations of the world. Here, Free Mages live relatively openly, using their gifts in public and gathering together openly to further their craft. These towns are ruled by a Council of leading citizens. Depending on the originating culture of the Free Enclave, these Councilors might be selected by challenging existing members to duels, out-debating them in contests of philosophy or simply being a scion of one of the existing ruling families. One constant through all Free Enclaves is the rule that a third of the Council must be made of non-Mages if there are any living in the enclave.   Secret enclaves are groups of Free Mages that have chosen to live in the settlements of nations where the Chartrites hold sway. These Free Mages operate in a very different manner to their counterparts in the Free Enclaves. For one thing, only Mages are part of a Secret enclave. The risks of trusting non-Mages who are constantly exposed to the Chartrite anti-Mage indoctrination and propaganda are too great.   The two parts of the Nation of Free Mages are unified in their purpose and work in concert. Secret Enclaves maintain lines of communication with nearby Free Enclaves and supply information, resources and liberated trainee sorcerers through them. In return, the Free Enclaves act as safe havens for any Secret Enclaves that are discovered by the Chartrites.

Clans

Within the enclaves, the Free Mages are organised into clans: extended family structures whose bloodlines are carefully traced and recorded. Originally, this was done in order to prevent severe inbreeding amonst the relatively small population of Free Mages that banded together in the wake of the Council of Tollania and the founding of The Charter Schools of Sorcery.

Technological Level

Whereas the Charter Schools of Sorcery forbid research and experimentation with sorcerous power, the Nation of Free Mages encourages both the seeking out of relics of the Magelords of old and experimentation to discover new ways to wield their powers. Thanks to this difference in attitudes, the Free Mages have powers that other sorcerers do not.

Religion

The prevailing religion in most Free Enclaves of the Free Mages is Tirunisi, although other religions have been introduced into Free Mage society both as a result of the exposure of members of Secret Enclaves and as a result of the influx of liberated sorcerers.
