Culture
Culture and cultural heritage
The Faroese are known as the most tenacious survivalists in the world, and this is reflected in many aspects of their culture.
Coming of Age Rites
In the distant past, Faroese youths only came of age after undertaking a personal survival expedition in which they would venture out into the wilderness alone to spend a number of days proving themselves against the forces of nature. Those who returned in good health were accorded respect as men, while those who returned thin, injured or sickly would be looked down on as weak and less capable and those who failed to return at all were neither searched for nor mourned, but simply presumed lost by a community that would already have moved on.
