Mount Tharnzul

Type: Volcanic Mountain / Extreme Hazard Zone
Location: Central Vashkelholme
Dominant Inhabitants: Dwarves, Ember Lizards, Lava-Fanged Fauna
Known For: Constant eruptions, lava-borne resources, ever-shifting terrain
Cultural Significance: "Living Mountain" in Dwarven belief, sacred to forge-priests and Emberhands

“She’s not a mountain, she’s a forge with moods.”

Mount Tharnzul is the most active and least predictable volcano in Largitas. Towering over central Vashkelholme, its ever-smoking crown dominates the region with fire, tremors, and ash. Its landscape is in constant flux—reshaped by quakes, lava flows, collapses, and explosive venting.

Despite its volatility, the mountain is home to the resilient Dwarven settlement of Gevblaith, whose people have made adaptation a cultural virtue.

Mount Tharnzul is more than a volcano—it is a test of will, a source of divine fire, and a crucible of innovation. Those who dwell here must embrace change as constant, for the mountain takes what it wants, but always leaves something behind in its wake.

To live on Tharnzul is to live in motion—with ash in your lungs, tools in your hands, and grit in your blood.

Adaptive Survival: Living with Tharnzul

Living on Mount Tharnzul isn’t about taming nature—it’s about learning its rhythm.

Survival Strategies:
  • Modular Construction: Homes are built to be disassembled and reassembled within hours.
  • Heat-Runes & Moss-Alarms: Early warning systems using specially bred lichen that changes color with heat.
  • Floating Forges: Smithies rest on sliding stone slabs that shift with the terrain.
  • Volcanic Watchers: A rotating roster tracks vent pressure, tremor patterns, and sulfur levels.
  • Ashwool Garb: Flame-resistant, breathable tunics woven from ash-fed goats or fungus fibers.
Agricultural Innovation:
  • Lava-Thistle Cultivation: Hardy fruit-bearing plants that thrive after firestorms.
  • Glowcap Tunnels: Bioluminescent mushroom farms nourished by geothermal humidity.
  • Mossbarley Fields: Resilient underground grain-fungus hybrid grown in ash-rich soil.
“We don't build for permanence. We build to prove we can rise again.”

Localized Phenomena

Nature of the Mountain

  • Eruption Frequency: One minor eruption per season; several microvents or lava seeps per week.
  • Seismic Activity: Tremors daily, major quakes at least once a month.
  • Temperature: Near the peak and in lower tunnels, ambient heat is enough to cook meat.
  • Ashfall Events: Frequent and unpredictable; residents track wind patterns obsessively.

History

Legends and Lore

  • The Ashbone Wyrm: A legendary molten dragon said to slumber in the mountain’s deepest vent.
  • Stonefather’s Crucible: Some claim the crucible used to forge the First Dwarf lies within Tharnzul’s magma chambers.
  • The Walking Flame: A fiery apparition that guides—or misguides—lost miners.

Tourism

Notable Features:

  • The Ember Maw: A deep, semi-stable lava lake that may connect to the Forge Heart.
  • The Shifting Stair: A natural but treacherous path up the mountainside, constantly rebuilt.
  • Ventfang Ridge: A cliff edge honeycombed with deadly gas vents and razor-edged obsidian.

Cultural and Spiritual Significance

To the Dwarves of Vashkelholme, Mount Tharnzul is alive—a forge gifted by the gods, and a trial of endurance.

Forge-priests believe that Tharnzul is where Terran and Ignara’s final breath still burns, and that surviving its wrath is a sacred rite. Many Emberhands begin their trials here, forging metal—and character—under ash and pressure.

Oh my gosh, I love the idea of the lichen they can use as an early warning system.   Definitely not a place I would want to live though!
